Coaching Students for Success in Summer Sessions
Summer sessions -- online, in person, or hybrid -- are starting up at institutions all over the country, offering both opportunity and challenge. Students take summer courses for a variety of reasons, and their goals strongly inform how they approach their work. Summer coursework is often structured differently, as well, and many students struggle to adjust to the unfamiliar timing. Many students are making up for courses they failed or they are trying to squeeze in classes to stay on pace for graduation while balancing all of their other life and family responsibilities. It’s daunting when some have the luxury to “take the summer off” or at least work at their jobs with a break from school.
Academic coaching can be a lifeline for students trying to figure out how to make the most of their summer learning experience. Coaches can engage in conversations about:
-
A student's particular goal. "What is your goal this summer?" Is the goal to increase GPA to pull out of academic probation? To get ahead and graduate early? To make up for ground lost because of a changed major? Different goals demand different courses of action.
-
The coursework structure. "What is the structure of your course?" Is the class being taken solo in four weeks straight? Is the student taking two courses in a longer period of time? Students may need to engage in different learning strategies when they have fewer topics and longer periods of focus.
-
Time management. "What are your school, work, and life responsibilities this summer?" In addition to the timing of the course meetings, which differs from the spring or fall, what other changes in responsibilities does the student have over the summer? Student schedules may look quite different than they do in a regular semester.
