Navigating Unpredictable Schedules

Navigating irregular schedules is a significant challenge for many college students, especially when they've come from a regular and structured high school schedule. Class meeting times vary, with some weekdays being busier or starting earlier than others. Some courses are in person, and others meet on Zoom or are run asynchronously with no meetings at all. And whatever one semester looks like, the next semester with its new courses is likely to look completely different. 


Time management is one of the most oft-cited topics for academic coaching sessions. But coaches aren't just helping students get through college so that they can move to a predictable 9-to-5 schedule — they are aiding students in building skills that will help them thrive in an unpredictable workplace. Increasingly, workers are finding that their jobs feature variable schedules, with last-minute shift and timing changes that are tough to manage. This recent article from CNN details how such jobs create reduced financial security, less ability to balance work with home life, and reduced satisfaction. This not only disadvantages workers, but presents potential downsides for the companies that employ them. 


Coaches know that student motivation to navigate variable schedules demands motivation and persistence. One way to drive motivation is to ask questions that encourage students to consider the skills and flexibility they are building, and how those will serve them in jobs that hold meaning for them. Questions like these may be useful:


  • Lay out your weekly schedule, and describe what you find challenging about it.


  • How can you create consistency in your life despite a variable schedule day to day? 


  • If you have ever had a job with a variable schedule, what helped you manage it?


  • What transferable life skills are you building when you find ways to succeed within an unpredictable schedule?
