Coaching for Chaotic Times

Encouraging Ways to Continue

Although chaotic periods have come before us and will likely happen again in the future, the current moment has brought the experience front and center. Within and without higher education, from local groups to the international stage, chaotic events and situations confront us almost every day. Even when we do not experience such chaos ourselves, the 24-hour news cycle available on countless platforms brings it into our cars, our living spaces, our ears, and our minds.

A mind besieged by chaos and worry struggles to find available bandwidth to learn. Here, then, is a dual opportunity for the coach – one, to help students understand this fact, and two, to guide students toward ways to reclaim their bandwidth.

Coaches can ask students – or colleagues, or even themselves – questions like these to confront and manage how their cognitive load has been commandeered by chaos:

  • How can you limit your exposure to chaotic and disturbing news reports?

  • What DO you control in this moment? Identify one or more things that you have the power to act upon.

  • Who helps you to be present and feel centered amidst the overwhelm? How can you connect with this person on a regular basis?

  • What arises in your mind as a top priority to handle in the next week, and how can you get moving on that today?

  • How can you cultivate a small oasis of peace in your daily life – where, when, and how?
