Coaching to Retain and Graduate Students Has Never Been More Crucial

Your Work Supports College ROI

Recently a New York Times article reported a 5% drop nationally, over the past year, in college-going among high school graduates. Posited reasons for this precipitous drop include issues with the FAFSA revamp, continued fallout from COVID-19, and fear of the ever-rising costs of college and subsequent weight of student loan debt. The article reports that colleges accepting a higher rate of Pell Grant recipients suffered more significantly, experiencing up to a 10% decrease in freshman enrollment. This means that even while the Pell Grant maximum has increased, such colleges will take a hit financially due to the lower enrollment of students who would be receiving the grants.

College budgets and jobs depend on the persistence of currently enrolled students, especially first gen and poverty-affected students who depend on Pell Grants and other support. Coaching directly addresses the gaps in self-advocacy, agency, self-awareness, personal and professional skills, and career ambition and direction. When these areas are addressed, students are more likely to stay on pace to graduate and launch successfully in the world of work. In this way, a college earns its ROI — it invests in a student, who post-graduation is able to resource themselves, contribute to work and society, and add to the data on the effectiveness of the alma mater.

Intentional coaching helps students build a bridge to graduation day and the professional world beyond, where they can use their gifts, talents, and abilities to the fullest. Coaches, help your students drive their own and their institution's productivity with approaches and questions like these:

  • Who are you as a student? Who would you like to be as a worker and employee? What is the difference — and if there is a difference, what changes might you make to establish habits that will serve you in both worlds?

  • What inner story do you tell yourself about yourself? How does it serve you? If you'd like to change it, what new story might lead to the future you envision for yourself?

  • What barriers and obstacles would you identify as standing in your way? Choose one that feels significant and talk about how you address it now. What choices do you have that can help you continue to challenge and overcome it?
