Coaching with the Habits of Mind

Remembering Educator Art Costa

This month, the world of education lost a groundbreaking innovator. Dr. Art Costa, who died at the age of 95, was professor of education emeritus at California State University Sacramento, the founder of the Center for Cognitive Coaching, and the co-developer, with Dr. Bena Kallick, of the sixteen Habits of Mind. Through research on how people approach problems, Costa and Kallick identified sixteen attributes displayed by people who are able to approach problem solving intelligently and effectively. The Habits of Mind are described at more length in this article by Costa and Kallick

The list of the Habits of Mind, including attributes such as persistence, metacognition, managing impulsivity, thinking flexibly, and taking responsible risks, is like a comprehensive tool kit for an academic coach thinking about what outcomes they hope to facilitate in their coachees. Any learner developing and using one or more Habits of Mind (as Costa notes, they are almost always employed in clusters) is growing their autonomy, cognitive power, and adaptability, and ultimately, their employability and promotability.

Coaches might turn to the Habits of Mind for:

  • A way to point out a useful attribute displayed by a struggling student who could use a perspective shift
  • Inspiration for powerful questions
  • Ideas for how to invite a coachee to address a persistent problem in a new way
  • Approachable "hooks" for facilitating self-directed learning
  • And more...

As you explore the Habits of Mind, join us in honoring Dr. Art Costa for his groundbreaking and profoundly humanitarian contributions to learners all around the world. LifeBound offers a variety of classes designed to help you apply these timeless habits in meaningful, lasting ways.

Make 2026 the Year Coaching Solves Higher Ed’s Toughest Challenges

Higher education is grappling with unprecedented challenges—rising mental health crises, the need for greater career readiness, and the unfortunate reality that many students struggle to secure meaningful employment or are let go shortly after starting. These issues affect not only individual students but also university outcomes like enrollment, retention, and long-term institutional success.

By equipping your staff with coaching training, you can help students build resilience, achieve meaningful employment, and address many challenges that universities face today.  Allocate your budget toward LifeBound’s training options this year and plan ahead to ensure your institution is prepared to address these critical needs effectively.  Let’s create a campus-wide culture of coaching and make an impact!
