This summer season has already shown many concerns for our Coal Country region. With the current water levels, we are seeing ourselves in an extreme drought. With these conditions our fire threat level is HIGH. Please adhere to all local and State laws this season to keep everyone safe.

Updates on the Additional Funds that Came to

Coal Country

In November 2020, the Coal Country Strike Team presented to the Schmidt Futures Foundation a request for additional funds to continue the efforts of the Utah Coal Country Strike Team. The additional funding request, which came with a four-to-one match and brings over a million dollars in matching funds, helps fulfill the original commitment to develop the workforce, revitalize housing, and invest in tourism infrastructure.

Update: CARBON COUNTY COWORKING SPACE

Secured Funding:

$68,275.28 (Governor’s Office of Economic Development Grant)

$73,685 (Schmidt Futures Foundation)

Partner: Southeastern Utah Business Technical & Assistance Center

Silicon Slopes East has partnered with the Southeastern Utah

Business Technical & Assistance Center (BTAC) to extensively renovate two coworking spaces, one in Carbon County and one in Emery County, to support remote workers and local entrepreneurism.

Update: GROUND-UP HOUSING CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM

Secured Funding:

$129,254 (U.S. Department of Agriculture Grant)

$64,600 (Schmidt Futures Foundation)

Partner: Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments

The Ground-Up Construction program works with local contractors to provide land and materials to build a brand-new home for participants who contribute with sweat equity.

This program is currently helping four individuals/families in Carbon County.

Update: CULINARY ENTREPRENEURISM –

COMMERCIAL KITCHEN INCUBATOR

Secured Funding:

$50,000 (U.S. Department of Agriculture Grant)

$25,000 (Schmidt Futures Foundation)

Partner: Southeastern Utah Business Technical & Assistance Center

The Business Technical & Assistance Center is remodeling an existing kitchen to commercial standards to serve as an incubator for local entrepreneurism in food service.

The Utah Coal Country Strike Team serves the coal communities of Carbon and Emery counties by raising incomes and diversifying the economy. The Strike Team includes a multi-disciplinary team of experts who, with the support of the Utah Legislature and national funder Schmidt Futures, assist with public policies and invest in workforce training, tourism infrastructure, housing revitalization and economic development incentives.
