COASTAL
|
Coastal is evocative of the beach. Crisp whites, open spaces, lack of delineation between indoor and out, natural hues and textures. |
With an abundance of light, "a coastal space takes its cues from the natural environment for everything from color palette through to materials used," says Will Taylor, author of Dream Decor. Keep it simple and you can't go wrong!
We have curated a sample of the current collections making a splash in the coastal category. For furniture and lighting, the Coastal Living Home collection by Universal Home, with lighting designed by Regina Andrew. For accessories and art, Regina Andrew, Vintage Print Gallery, and Grand Image Home.

Staring in France, this company pioneered many developments in wallpaper, the most important of which was truly permanent printing or inalterable wallpaper. Wallquest has since evolved into one of the most prestigious names in the industry, yet maintains the link to the tradition of designing and manufacturing wall coverings.
The Pelican Prints Maui Maui collection of wall coverings includes many patterns and textures, including Pineapple Floral (in 3 variants) and Weave grasscloth (in 5 variants).

We've come a long way from seahorses and starfish! The coastal look in the Southwest Florida region has evolved and grown more sophisticated. Generally speaking, the local clientele seems to be seeking a carefully curated coastal ambience, which means they're paying attention to their rugs!

Design elements which can be directly correlated with the local geography have been rising to prominence. Asymmetrical motifs clearly derived from waves, sand, and the movement between them slip together with a coastal palette to create awe-inspiring works of art.
To keep up with trends artisans have adjusted their techniques significantly to achieve the desired look. One such technique is oxidizing rugs. This process has become prevalent in the last couple years. Essentially, a rug is woven with wool and silk (or viscose); then the piece is washed with a lye solution (traditionally derived from leaching wood ashes). The result: the wool in the pile of the rug is dissolved to the foundation and a soft blending of coloration within the silk occurs. These pieces are almost always quite fine, as rugs with lower knot densities cannot withstand the caustic nature of the lye.
Considering the harmonious blend of natured-inspired design combined with superior craftsmanship, there is really quite a lot to love about a hand-knotted coastal area rug. Here are a few:
- Lower pile - Oxidized pieces tend to have a lower pile which means less of a trip hazard and easier cleaning!
- Regionally appealing - Incorporate elements of the stunning Florida coastline.
- Persistence of value - An investment that holds its value exponentially longer than a machine-made rug, especially if it is comprised of actual silk and wool.
- Very little shedding - Lye-washed pieces are almost always very fine, which means very little "sprouting" from the pile.
