St. Monica’s Saves is an outreach program started in 2023 designed to make Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic Electronic Defibrillator (AED), rescue, and choking hazard training more affordable to more people. With donations from individuals and local organizations, St. Monica’s, Cantonment, in cooperation with The American Red Cross offsets the cost and offers periodic hands-on training to anyone for just $25 (a savings of over $100). When it comes to CPR, it's important to know how to treat both kids and adults. St. Monica’s Saves includes both. Last November, 14 members of the Cantonment community learned these valuable life-saving skills at St. Monica’s. On Saturday, July 13, 2024, 10 more people were trained by a certified American Red Cross instructor. In one year alone, 436,000 Americans die from cardiac arrest. Globally, cardiac arrest claims more lives than colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, influenza, pneumonia, auto accidents, HIV, firearms, and house fires combined. (Source: American Heart Association Consensus Statement). CPR can double or triple the chance of survival when bystanders take action. St. Monica’s is committed to ensuring members of the community can easily and affordably obtain the most up-to-date lifesaving knowledge and skills to confidently respond when moments matter. For more information visit the Saint Monica’s Saves website.

| Crayons, glue sticks, pencils, oh my! Some students in the Cantonment area will return to school well-equipped. Essential school supplies and more were free to students on Saturday, July 28 thanks to the generous donations of congregants. The Back-to-School Bash at St. Monica’s kicked off with a long line of their neighbors waiting to receive free school supplies. The first thing students received was a backpack which is essential for carrying school supplies. They then walked down the line of tables to “shop” for items to put inside. It was like Christmas in July for some families. St. Monica's congregation feels the Back-to-School Bash is crucial to prepare children for the school year. It means students will have the tools necessary to learn and succeed. Some parents are out of work. Grandparents are raising grandchildren on limited incomes. Some families are scrambling just to pay the rent and fill the cabinet with food. Events like this help fill the gap. This year St. Monica’s gave away 50 backpacks and countless school supplies to grateful families. It wasn’t just about the school supplies though. The event, which includes fun activities such as a water slide, water balloon games, hot dogs, and more was more about making connections and building relationships with members of the community. The best outcome is that it shows them that St. Monica’s is involved and cares about its neighbors. | |
Several members of our diocese participated in the Jonathan Myrick Daniels Pilgrimage on August 10, in Hayneville, Alabama, where Episcopal seminarian Jonathan Daniels was martyred in August of 1965. The Jonathan Daniels pilgrimage has become a fixture for many and a reminder that the equality for which he gave his life is a continuing sacrifice. Photo credit: Jill Showers-Chow. | |
