Together, we are the body of Christ ~ transforming people from members into disciples, moving more deeply into God's call to life and ministry, and extending our mission beyond the status quo.

Note: The Duvall Center office of the bishop and diocesan staff will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.

All Saints Now a Green and Plastic-free Church

The Green Team of All Saints, Mobile recently submitted for vestry approval a new policy titled “Use of Eating and Drinking Utensils and Related Items at Gatherings in All Saints’ Buildings and Property.” The teams sees this as an opportunity for action toward environmental sustainability, a significant issue of our time. The goal is to provide reusable (washable) utensils at all gatherings, thus eliminating all plastic, styrofoam, and paper utensils. The policy applies to all meetings, meals, and gatherings, for church members and others using campus facilities, making All Saints an environmentally sustainable and ultimately plastic-free church.

While it is still too early to report on any specific results or impact, the Rev. Bob Donnell reports the congregation has been “all in” with the work of the green team and with adopting this new policy. He says, "We have had a successful recycling policy for several years, and have done some composting, but this new policy is a big step forward. The goal is to eliminate all plastic, styrofoam, and paper products at all gatherings. We have plenty of plates, cups, glasses, silverware, etc., and a dishwasher in our kitchen to clean them. There will be challenges, especially with eliminating paper products at gatherings, but we will see where this leads us."

Priest blesses the golf carts

Cruising in Peace to Love and Serve the Lord

Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola, Florida hosted the 30th annual Historic Apalachicola Home & Garden Tour on May 3-4. This wildly popular event is run entirely by a volunteer staff of parishioners and draws people from around the region. With a chance to learn about the unique homes and architecture nestled in this nearly 200-year-old hamlet, Trinity celebrated its most successful tour ever: over 850 people toured the seven homes and community garden. Along with an opening Evensong service, a silent auction, and a jumble sale, this event raises funds used directly for the preservation and maintenance of the church’s four historic buildings.

Because of Apalachicola’s laid-back and coastal feel, one often sees golf carts flitting about as a primary means of transportation. Pets enjoy these open-air rides with their owners. And this gave the rector of Trinity Apalachicola, the Rev. Stephen Pecot, an idea. People love their golf carts; and we already bless animals in October, the fishing fleet in November, and homes year-round. Why not bless golf carts when they show up for the Tour of Homes?

St. Matthew’s, Chipley, celebrated Rogation Sunday on May 5. Prayer stations were designated using photographs of local landmarks and focused on Chipley as a farming community. The stations included a local business, owned by a member, that sells seeds, animal feed, plants, and fuel; a park during the Watermelon Festival; the Chipley Farmers’ Market; a member of St Matthew’s serving food to the local baseball team; a local veterinarian with his patient, a turtle; and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. Youth assisted in the service by presenting the posters for each prayer station. At the close of the procession, all members who farm, garden, or support the farming industry were asked to come forward for a prayer. Rogation Days are the three days preceding Ascension Day, especially devoted to asking for God's blessing on agriculture and industry.
