Two Churches Partner for Youth Mission Trip Within Our Diocese

For a typically quiet summer, there was quite a commotion in the parish hall of St. James Eufaula this past July. Fifteen youths and five adults from Christ the King Episcopal Church in Santa Rosa Beach spent three days using St. James as a base of operations for their mission trip to perform community service work in the Eufaula area. They helped a number of local groups including Barbour County Humane Society, Family Services Barbour, Fendall Hall, Southern Souls, and Fostering Hope in Headland. They also helped stock the S. James food pantry and cook prepared meals for shut-ins.

The Parish Hall at Holy Trinity, Pensacola recently was transformed into a jungle as children and adult volunteers enjoyed five sessions of ROAR! Life is wild, God is good. Surrounded by palm trees, a jungle, animals, and a waterfall, each session included a Bible story, a craft, a science demonstration, a snack, and songs that complimented the curriculum. This was the first year that VBS has been held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and it was a success!

The congregation of St. Monica's, Cantonment was recently in the local news for their commitment to caring for and conserving God's beautiful creation. The vast church property has become a Certified Wildlife Habitat® through The National Wildlife Federation and its Garden for Wildlife™ movement. The congregation of St. Monica's thought this a fitting tribute to their late priest, the Rev. Anthony MacWhinnie, who was also a marine biologist. READ THE ARTICLE

In celebration of St. James, Eufaula’s 175th anniversary as a parish a dinner and storytelling night was held. Inspired by this year’s diocesan convention theme, the night was titled, “This is Our Story, This is Our Song.” Following a potluck dinner several favorite songs were sung, then everyone gathered in a big circle and proceeded to tell past stories of St. James. Their historian, Gary Jones, told of the 1830’s beginnings. Past parishioner letters describing services in the early 1900’s were read. A long-time church member described the turmoil of integration in the 60s and our sexton told of finding a baby possum in our pipe organ. Many members contributed humorous and heartwarming stories. A member said, "It was a great way to remember our past and unite us as a church family."

The men of St. Mary’s by the Sea, Coden, known as The Coach’s Club, gathered on Saturday, August 5, to spiffy up the church grounds and enjoy some food and fellowship. Pictured front row: Gerry Phillips, John Povliches the Younger, and John Povliches the Elder. Back row: David Strauss, Sam Everett Junior, Sam Everett Senior, and Jim Wright.
