Tech Tip from our Technology Teacher, Ms. Cameron:
Storytelling with ChatGPT can be a fun and creative way to engage kids in language development, imagination, and collaboration. Just remember not to put in real names or identifying information. The first thing I tried with ChatGPT was to have it write a story about my dog who had escaped that morning. The prompt I put in said “Write a story about a little dog named [X] who runs away and the adventures she has”. In seconds it produced a cute story that I was able to share with students.
Here are a few ways you can try it with your child:
Choose a Story Theme
Let your child pick a topic, such as:
- An exciting baseball game
- An adventure with talking animals
- A space journey to a new planet
- A mystery about a lost treasure
- A day in the life of a tiny superhero
You can shape the story by stating the age you want it written for, how many words you want it to be, anything you want to include (or exclude). You can ask it to build a story that teaches a lesson such as kindness, honesty, or perseverance.
Turn It into an Activity
- Illustrate the Story: Have your child draw scenes from the story.
- Act It Out: Pretend to be characters and act out parts of the adventure.
- Write It Down: Turn the ChatGPT story into a mini-book with their own illustrations.
Smart tech choices start at home. Have fun experimenting with stories and generative AI.
