Parent Teacher Conferences

Teachers have shared their SignUpGenius links for Parent-Teacher Conferences which are scheduled for Thursday, March 13th, from 12:45–3:40 PM and 5:00–7:55 PM. If you haven't signed up yet, please reach out to your child's teacher to secure a time slot. We look forward to partnering with you to support your child's success!

STEM CLUB

On March 5th, our 4th and 5th grade STEM Club, led by Mrs. Cameron, put their problem-solving skills to the test at the DCIU STEM Competition. Using the engineering design process, students tackled real-world challenges in infrastructure, transportation, and urban development.

From brainstorming innovative solutions to sketching blueprints and constructing prototypes, these young engineers demonstrated creativity and perseverance. For the competition, they rebuilt their projects from scratch, maintained detailed scientific journals, and presented their work to a panel of judges. We eagerly await the results, but no matter the outcome, we are incredibly proud of their dedication and ingenuity. Fantastic job, STEM Club!

Join Us for Sun Valley Science Night! Mark your calendars for an exciting night of science and exploration at Sun Valley Science Night on Thursday, March 13, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Hosted by the Sun Valley Science National Honor Society, this event features student projects, hands-on demos, planetarium stargazing, classroom tours, and prize giveaways. Plus, enjoy delicious treats (cash only) and support a great cause by bringing donations for Rags2Riches Animal Rescue (newspaper, towels, blankets, and sheets). We hope to see you there for a fun and educational evening!

Tech Tip from our Technology Teacher, Ms. Cameron:

The last few Tech Tips have been about generative AI. I have started introducing it to our 4th and 5th grade to get a pulse on what they know about it and how they feel about it. So far, I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find that they have a healthy skepticism about it.

We discussed the importance of having laws for safety. The analogy I use is that we have traffic lights to keep us safe. It is illegal to run a red light. Do people run red lights? Sure. Is it safe? No. Is it legal? No. Can you get in trouble for it? Yes! COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) is the same idea. It is there to protect us and our privacy. Can you break it by getting a YouTube channel or Instagram or AI account when you aren't old enough? Sure. Is it safe? No. Is it legal? No. Can you get in trouble? Yes.

Our goal is to talk about the safe and ethical use of generative AI now so that when they turn 13 and are able to use it, they will be prepared for it. In the next Tech Tip I'll send some ideas you can try at home with your child if you would like to experiment with it together.

Smart tech choices start at home—see you in the next issue!
