Weekly Update
October 18, 2026
| | A Message from the Principal | |
Dear Coebourn Elementary Families,
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and dedication to our school community! It has been an exciting and productive week at school, and we have so many wonderful celebrations and important updates to share with you.
This past week’s Leader in Me Family Night was a fantastic success. Our student leaders did an outstanding job sharing how leadership habits shape their daily learning and personal growth, and it was wonderful seeing our school family come together. With a little flexibility, our Spooky Fall Fest on Friday, October 16 was also an absolute blast for everyone involved.
In the classroom, Firefly testing is now officially complete for grades 3–5. Our students are moving right along into goal-setting as they create their own personal WIGs (Wildly Important Goals) and learn about their overall grade-level goals. We encourage you to ask your child about the goals they are setting for themselves this trimester!
Looking ahead, school safety remains our top priority. We will hold our first safety lockdown drill on Wednesday, October 21. Prior to the drill, our teachers will review all lockdown procedures with students in a gentle, developmentally appropriate way to ensure they feel safe and confident. Members of the Brookhaven Police Department will also be present during the drill to offer support and serve as an extra set of eyes.
Thank you once again for all you do to support our students, teachers, and school environment!
Warmly,
Nicole Small
Principal, Coebourn Elementary School

Simple tips to help families raise safe, smart, and responsible digital citizens.

Cyberbullying—Recognizing the Warning Signs
Cyberbullying doesn't always look the way we expect, and sometimes children may hurt others online without fully realizing the impact of their actions. Warning signs might include repeatedly making fun of others in online games or chats, sharing embarrassing photos, or using technology to exclude or upset a classmate. Rather than assuming the worst, parents can use these moments as opportunities to talk about empathy, responsible choices, and how our words affect others—even through a screen. If you notice concerning behavior, stay calm, ask questions, and help your child understand the impact of their actions and how to make things right. Teaching children to take responsibility for their online behavior is an important part of raising kind, respectful digital citizens.
Action Step: Watch the short video below and use it to start a conversation. Ask your child, "Have you ever seen someone being treated this way online?" and "What could you do if you realized your own words or actions had hurt someone?"

Building Leaders Together: Our First Family Leader in Me Night! 🌟
Families gathered for our very first Family Leader in Me Night, and it was an incredible success!
Our talented Student Lighthouse Team members took the lead, guiding families through interactive sessions for each Habit. Families rotated through hands-on activities, learning together and putting the Habits into practice. It was inspiring to watch our student leaders shine while families created great memories together.
A heartfelt thank you to every family who joined us, and to our amazing teachers and staff who organized and supported this memorable evening!

SPARK Conference for grades 5-8
A select group of 5th grade girls from the PDSD elementary schools participated in workshops about friendship and setting boundaries, managing emotions, and building self-confidence. They got to choose “electives” in the afternoon (yoga, self-defense, art) where the messages from the morning were woven into those activities as well. The girls had a great day!

Every Day Counts at Coebourn!
Every school day is an opportunity to learn, grow, connect, and create lasting memories. Being here every single day matters—and our Cougars are showing up ready to shine!
Cougars Here! Cougars Ready! Cougars Belong Here!
To kick off our first Surprise Attendance Day, our amazing staff brought the party to drop-off! We cheered on our students as they arrived with music, signs, bubbles, and high-fives.
To top off the surprise, we spun the wheel, and student #18 who was present in every classroom won a coupon for a free café snack, courtesy of our wonderful PTL!
Thank you for making attendance a priority. We can't wait to see who wins on our next Surprise Attendance Day!
