Cold Weather, Big Adventure: Troop 693G Conquers Northern Tier
Cerritos Troop 693G recently returned from an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime adventure at Northern Tier High Adventure Base Musher Camp.
Kara, Audrey, Connie, Jadyn, and Keira, alongside adult leaders Jennifer Johnston and Susan Cruz, spent four incredible days immersed in the world of dog mushing; working hands-on with 24 sled dogs. The Scouts learned how to properly care for and harness the dogs, mastered the skills needed to drive a sled, and even took turns riding in the sled themselves.
Over the course of the weekend, they completed five runs. Three of those runs were especially meaningful, as the Scouts gave rides to fellow campers while sharing what they had learned about the dogs and the musher program, demonstrating leadership and confidence in a truly unique setting.
For their final challenge, some of the Scouts chose to sleep outside in a quinzhee, embracing the ultimate cold-weather camping experience. With temperatures ranging from 16 below zero to the mid-20s, this was no small feat, especially for California Scouts more accustomed to milder conditions. Thanks to thorough orientation and outfitting, the troop felt fully prepared and rose to the occasion.
This extraordinary Northern Tier experience pushed limits, built resilience, and created memories that will last a lifetime.
Have an outing story to share? Send it to our Marketing & Communications Director, Cicily Gardea, to be shared with our amazing Scouting community!
