With the low temperatures forecast over the next few days the City of Keene Public Works Department would like to share some reminders:
- Check on your senior neighbors and anyone who has trouble getting around.
- Know the symptoms of Hypothermia and try to limit time outside during low temperatures. (Confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, stiff muscles)
- Keep pets inside as much as possible, if it's too cold for you, it's too cold for your pets! Make sure they have adequate food and water available.
- If you have to be outside, be sure to layer up and cover your exposed face, skin, and nose.
- If travel is necessary in cold or winter weather, make sure your car is stocked with supplies in case you are stuck in your car or an emergency occurs.
- Remember the 3 feet rule: if you are using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surface and keep anything flammable at least three feet away!
- Check all chimneys and flues for blockages before you light your fireplace or wood/pellet stoves.
- Do not use your oven, propane, or other combustible fuel heater to try to heat enclosed spaces.
- Keep your pipes from freezing by allowing warm air to circulate and leaving water dripping on extremely cold nights. If you do experience frozen pipes, please contact a licensed plumber for assistance.
- If you operate an electrical generator, make sure to place it outside in a well-ventilated area.
