More than 100 engaged residents provide input during Coleman Park Community Forum #1

The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services department and project consulting team hosted a well-attended public event June 16 near what will be the new 70-acre Coleman Community Park site. The Coleman Community Park project will incorporate many features of a traditional community park facility but will also include trails and wetland access to the adjacent retention pond which is under re-design by the City’s Stormwater Enterprise. The June 16 event included inspirational images of a variety of recreational features for the public to consider for this eastern Colorado Springs park. The 100+ attendees had the opportunity to talk with the designers and City staff to provide personal input and their vision for what they would like to see in this new recreational space. Additionally, the staff provided two walking tours of Sand Creek that runs through the community park property, highlighting six different unique features of the existing creek and bringing awareness to creek health and design opportunities.

The public's feedback will help shape initial design concepts and alternatives for the park. Some of the input provided by residents during the event included: pickleball courts, security and safety, habitat/open space protection, integrated water/nature play, accessible play spaces, connectivity with the creek, concern for parking near existing homes, flexible lawn and programmable plaza spaces.(Photos credit: Trails and Open Space Coalition).

Another public meeting will be scheduled in Fall 2022 for community feedback on park alternatives.

If you were not able to attend the June 16 event but would like to be a part of the process, please visit the Coleman Park Master Plan website and take the survey (survey closes on July 16), sign up to be on the enewsletter database, and plan to take a Self-Guided Walking Tour using the map resource.
