Ken, a 65 year old farmer in Nova Scotia, became ill. After some investigations, he was found to have a very high eosinophil count in his bloodstream. He started to lose weight and became much weaker. 

We learned through our research that when eosinophils in high concentration

penetrate tissue such as heart muscle, that the eosinophils release biochemical agents that destroy tissue. If unchecked, this process can be fatal. 

RCM Health was asked by the family to provide advice and advocacy for Ken.

RCM Health has a large roster of specialists. We did a search of our own database and found the most accomplished eosinophil expert in Canada at a leading academic centre. 

We emailed him a clinical summary, asked him to provide a virtual consultation and he agreed.

Ken’s treating doctor joined the Zoom call with us, the family and the expert.

The information provided was very valuable and offered everyone involved ideas about possible treatment. 

Collaboration is the secret sauce when we deal with complex cases.

I learned about the importance of collaboration when I did team-based work in my MBA years at University of Toronto.

No one can be expected to know everything.

The eosinophil expert who did the consultation had spent the last 30 years researching this field. 

In Ken’s case, if the treating physician had not been available, we host a virtual consultation, record the session, and with the patient's permission we share the recording to the treating team.

Other times, we will coach the patient in how to ask the treating doctor questions and provide them with published literature to share with their doctor.
