The professional development we have described in the last three blogs has been proven over decades to impact student learning. From the first year of learning together in Project CLEAR, we have learned many lessons that will guide us moving forward. Essential to the preparation of coaches and embedded in the one-on-one intervention program during professional development is the use of models and modeling effective practice, which is the fourth point in this blog series and is a core principle of Project CLEAR. Debra Rich, Ed.D. is a trainer and assistant director of the Comprehensive Literacy Center at Saint Mary’s College of California. Her research interests include educational reform, classroom discourse, vocabulary development (including academic language), and the integration of literacy and mathematics. Deb has served as a building principal and held central office roles in multiple districts including serving as a K-12 curriculum director. She has been a reading recovery teacher and teacher leader as well as a classroom teacher. She currently serves as president of the Reading Recovery Council of North America board of directors. She truly embodies a person for whom service is a mission and passion.

Project CLEAR is offering a two-unit course on assessment where administrators will learn about comprehensive literacy assessment that is assets-based, administrators will expand their understanding of support for a literacy-focused team to collaboratively develop an acceleration plan that would identify and address student needs by increasing accessibility to high-quality K-12 literacy acceleration for diverse students in all settings by highly trained intervention teachers. The administrators’ deeper understanding of literacy assessments will support their leadership within their school or district’s ability to identify student needs and develop a literacy acceleration plan within an iterative system.
