Hello Gout Education,
The Gout Education Society is committed to raising awareness of gout—the most common form of inflammatory arthritis. The Society arms healthcare professionals, like you, with resources to share with patients and staff—and provides you with access to the most up-to-date research and information about gout and treatment options through GoutEducation.org.
This month, the Society is focused on raising awareness of the need for medical professionals to educate patients on the disease, while also acknowledging the importance of collaborative approach when it comes to diagnosis, treatment and management of gout. Gout can require a variety of professionals, not only to manage the effects of gout, but also other health conditions.
Patients often face inadequate care and it's the role of medical professionals to help address this concern. One of the most common causes of inadequate care? Low awareness of the disease from patients.
The most common inadequacies around awareness of the disease include: risk factors, commonly seen comorbid conditions, and treatment options. Providing patients with educational resources is a key tactic to improve awareness of these topics surrounding gout.
However, it's imperative that each medical professional across the patient's care team relay consistent information about the disease. Depending on the level of care needed—whether it be a rheumatologist, nephrologist, podiatrist or others—patients can face conflicting information on the disease. A key takeaway for medical professionals is to work together to develop a management plan.
