Nonprofit newsrooms join forces on Giving Tuesday to ‘tap into the greater good together’
|
|
On Giving Tuesday, three NewsMatch participants, Documented, El Tímpano and Enlace Latino NC, teamed up to amplify their case for supporting immigrant-serving newsrooms. They promoted the initiative extensively on social media and generated additional promotional support by sending social copy and graphics to their networks. By working collaboratively, these newsrooms were able to extend the reach of their messaging from coast-to-coast and demonstrate how revenue-building can be done collectively.
Why do this together? In an email to supporters, the news organizations wrote:
“First, we serve communities that aren’t always the ones who have the means to give, but our hope is that there are people out there who support them getting the information they need to fully participate – civically, and in their daily lives. Second, this #GivingNewsDay, we wanted to rise above the competition and show that we can tap into the greater good together, rather than in isolation. We believe lots of things – revenue building included – can also be achieved through solidarity.”
News organizations in the INN Network produce news that is created for and committed to the communities it serves. This season, we invite you to explore nonprofit newsrooms reporting on the topics and communities you care about.

Our Story of the Week comes from Reveal and Mother Jones. These organizations focus on in-depth, investigative coverage of topics affecting people today, from criminal and racial justice to climate change.
A 2021 investigation from Reveal and Mother Jones exposed the exploitative labor practices of Central Romana Corp., a top sugar producer in the Dominican Republic. Now, the United States government is blocking all imports from the company.

The United States will block shipments of raw sugar from a top Dominican producer with close ties to two wealthy Florida businessmen after finding indications of forced labor at its sprawling Caribbean plantation. Sugar from the Central Romana Corp.’s cane fields feeds into the supply chains of major U.S. brands, including Domino and the Hershey Co.
The ban on all imports from Central Romana went into effect today.
“Manufacturers like Central Romana, who fail to abide by our laws, will face consequences as we root out these inhumane practices from U.S. supply chains,” AnnMarie R. Highsmith, executive assistant commissioner at U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Trade, said in a press release.
The company is owned in part by the Florida-based Fanjul Corp., a global sugar and real estate conglomerate.
The federal investigation found five indications of labor abuse among cane cutters employed and housed by Central Romana: abuse of vulnerability, isolation, withholding of wages, abusive working and living conditions, and excessive overtime. Central Romana’s plantation shipped more than 295 million pounds of raw sugar from the Dominican Republic to the U.S. last year.
