Steve: In small amounts used for cooking, cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric are generally safe (except for salicylate intolerant individuals) and can provide health benefits, depending on their quality and preparation. However, at higher therapeutic doses, they can interact with medications or cause side effects. Here's an example why you need to speak with a knowledgable health professional when considering a heavily concentrated spice supplement.

Cinnamon

Cinnamaldehyde is a chemical from cinnamon that activates receptors that increase the excretion of certain drugs, potentially reducing their effectiveness. The cheaper Asian cassia cinnamon contains larger amounts of coumarin than the more expensive Ceylon cinnamon. In high doses, coumarin can damage the liver and, in combination with anticoagulants, can increase the risk for bleeding. Interactions may occur with painkillers, antidepressants, chemotherapeutic agents, and antidiabetic drugs. Reported side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms, headaches, and skin reactions, such as dermatitis or worsening rosacea.

Ginger

Its active constituents, such as gingerol, have blood-thinning effects when consumed regularly, chronically, or in concentrated form and can increase bleeding risk when taken with anticoagulants. Supplemental doses can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as mucosal irritation, bloating, and heartburn.

Turmeric

The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, interacts with liver enzymes and may affect antidepressants, antihypertensives, chemotherapeutic agents, and certain antibiotics. Its blood-thinning, blood sugar-lowering, and blood pressure-reducing properties can potentiate the effects of anticoagulants, antidiabetics, insulin, and antihypertensives. Curcumin is contraindicated in gallstones, cholestasis, bleeding disorders or anticoagulation, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Others that contraindicate are oregano, cayenne, and holy basil, to name a few.

A 23 year-old female came to see Steve to help maintain colitis remission, help bring on her period which was dormant, aid in weight loss, and help with binge eating.

She had been able to stay away from medication for her colitis, but still dealt with flare-ups that caused her to have blood in her stool periodically. Her blood work showed excess acidity and low grade inflammation, among other things.

Steve helped her alkalize her diet, gave recommendations for how to repair her intestinal lining to the degree that it could be repaired, fixed areas of nutrient deprivation, as well as gave her binge eating and stress management techniques.

While she definitely had some days where she binged, for the vast majority she was on track. She cut down on saturated fat, red meats, and acidic foods, as well as took targeted healing supplements. In a little over a month, she noticed her clothes fitting better because she lost weight. She got her period back. Moreover, she had not seen blood in her stool.

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, Chiropractic published the case of a 13-month-old boy who suffered from repeated ear and sinus infections since the age of three months. He underwent several rounds of antibiotics with little relief. An ENT scheduled him to have ear tube surgery for both ears, however the parents sought chiropractic care to see if they could avoid having that surgery. 

The chiropractor examined the boy with an otoscope, which revealed redness in the ears. He was checked for subluxations and his upper neck had misalignments. This area is filled with nerve signals that control muscles responsible for draining the middle ear. When this drainage is impaired, fluid can accumulate behind the eardrum, creating a breeding ground for infections and inflammation known as otitis media. 

The boy received gentle chiropractic adjustments to help normalize eustachian tube function and enhance immune response. After the first adjustment his symptoms began to improve immediately. The redness resolved by the fourth chiropractic visit, and the parents canceled the scheduled surgery. They kept him under wellness care and he experienced no more recurrences or complications.
