Help Folks & Have Fun at Shared Table

Hope you'll join us on Sunday at the Shared Table FUNdraiser: Sept. 13th from 3-6 pm at the El Pueblito Church (1309 Paseo del Pueblo Norte). We’re heading over to join in the festivities, with a silent auction, food, live music by Four Letter Word and dancing.

Last year, we had a blast. Volunteers cooked the juiciest, custom-order hamburgers and loads of folks bid on items, listened to the band and bounced around the dance floor. All of it benefits their mission – for 32 years, Shared Table has distributed 25-pound boxes of food, health-care items, school supplies and essentials twice a month, all year long.

This year, I’m donating another painting: “Comfort of Returning Home” (16x20). If you're unable to attend in person, you can place your bid during the event (3-6 pm) by calling Cheri at 505-440-6849. This is a true donation, so 100% will support their mission. Last year, an out-of-state bidder won, and we cover the shipping. I’m not auctioning “Dinner with Ed” at our home this time. We hosted the local dinner in February and have the second one scheduled for later this month. By next year, we’ll be caught up and can figure out another fun activity.

Dodge City Art Show & Taos Fall Arts

Heads up – I’ll be showing at the 2027 Unbridled Western Art Show at the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kansas. The opening reception is Jan. 15 with the show continuing until Feb. 14. Let’s get together and party in Dodge City! I’ll remind everyone closer to the date, but if you want an invitation to the Jan. 15 opening, just let me know.

I'm excited! Here's the description of the show's focus and spirit: ”The American West has long represented independence, resilience, imagination, and the unbridled pursuit of opportunity. Like the untamed landscapes and enduring spirit that shaped our nation’s frontier, the artists featured in this exhibition continue to explore and celebrate the beauty, history, and character of the West through their work.”

I think I was in one of their shows way back when... fuzzy. I remember showing there but not going there. From what I’ve read, it's partly a fine art and history museum and partly an outdoor experience of Dodge City's past, with historical figures, saloon girls, reenactments (like gunfights between good guys and outlaws), shows and activities. I'm imagining a Tombstone vibe – can't wait to check it out.

But before that, the Taos Fall Arts Festival is back on this year, from Sept. 18 to Oct. 4. Artwork will be shown in three locations: the Historic Courthouse (on plaza), U.S. Bank (on plaza), and Tuesday Morning. My painting will be at the U.S. Bank building: "Beauty of Community and Culture" (16x20). To me, it embraces the special warmth, loving unity and traditions that communities share.

"He who holds Stirling, holds Scotland"

Now for another chapter in our European adventures. Entering Stirling Castle transports you into an ancient storybook fable. More Scottish monarchs were born, died or crowned here than at any other site. It was the strategic "Key to Scotland" due to its location: high on a volcanic crag and surrounded by steep cliffs on three sides, it guards the crossing point of the River Forth passage between the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands).

Tidbits of history – Mary, Queen of Scots, spent her childhood here and as a baby was crowned inside the Chapel Royal in 1543. Kings like James IV and James V transformed the military fortress into a grand Renaissance palace with artwork, lavish bedchambers and medieval banquet halls. Also, it was attacked or besieged at least eight times during the Wars of Independence, changing hands often between Scottish and English forces.

My favorite part was wandering around on the walls – you can walk all around the place and look down on the castle courtyards, fields and city below. Breathtaking views.

Edinburgh: "Athens of the North"

Many of you have probably visited several European cities, but as this was my first trip, I thought Edinburgh was the most jaw-dropping "this can't be real" place I've EVER seen.

“Old Town” has been occupied since the bronze age, with tall, medieval, stone buildings arranged in a fish-bone pattern, with the Royal Mile as the main bone/road leading up to Edinburgh Castle (on right in photo above). When it became desperately overpopulated and cramped (1700’s), they built “New Town” with elegant stone townhouses, gardens and public squares. Running between them is a gorgeous, expansive, lush park.

I was glad we got to the castle early. Reasonable amount of folks were touring in the morning, and our guide had told us to take in the throngs of tourists waiting to enter when we left. Truth! While they waited in line, we happily strolled down the Royal Mile, taking in the sights and popping into the cute shops. Fun just to "people watch," like two guys with an owl. 10 pounds for your photo with it.

Of course we frequented a few delightful pubs – there's no better way to experience the culture than to share a beer and chat with locals. Our favorites were "The Conan Doyle" and the "Theatre Royal Bar," both of which were fabulously close to our hotel.
