Fall Harvest: The Life Blood of NM!
|
|
What’s green and makes the world go around? If you answered “money,” you must be from New York City. Ha ha! Just kidding – but I gotta tell you that around these here parts, locals automatically perk up and shout with pride: New Mexico Green Chile!
Go up and down the streets of Taos right now, and you will see several roasting stations, especially in front of grocery stores. I eagerly bought my huge, steaming bag of locally-grown deliciousness from Mante’s Chow Cart. Oh how delightful to open that bag and smell those hot, steaming, freshly roasted, meaty chiles! Big fat ones! Every fall, I lay them on a table, cool the darlings down and divide them into freezer bags to last the entire year. Mmmmm…..

It’s tradition.
Even if I have freezers packed full of chile (which I always do), I still have a compelling need to buy fresh ones! Chile is in my blood. Grandma cooked delicious stews and pots of beans with green chile. She didn’t make “traditional” dishes like we think of today – green chile cheeseburgers or green chile enchiladas… I think the main reason was they didn’t have a variety of cheeses. They raised goats and milked them to make goat cheese, which was a curdled type of white cheese. She sometimes used it in chile dishes, but mostly she served it with syrup poured over it. I have no idea why...dessert?
In any event, when I was older my parents planted tons of chile on our farm. Yes, like most kids, I was tasked with picking it and roasting it on a grill (we didn’t have a roasting barrel like they use today). Back then, I took the dishes Mom made (like chile rellenos) for granted. I suppose that like most kids, I craved foods we rarely or never had. As an adult, I have most definitely come to my senses. Chile...quite frankly...rules!
I paint chile too, but I usually capture fields and ristras of red chile simply because red is my favorite color. It stands out and adds a pop of brightness to our NM landscapes.

Fall Forests & Forrest's Fortune
|
|
This fall, if you decide to take a hike in our gorgeous, color-filled forests, be on the lookout for Forrest's fortune!
|
|
Forrest's fortune in the forest... that's a tongue twister!
If you haven't heard about Forrest Fenn, he is a very eccentric guy who hid a treasure box filled with gold, emeralds, diamonds, and other valuables - to the tune of some $5M - somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. He lives in Santa Fe, and rumor has it that he hid his booty in a secret location and got home within a day. Therefore, many people think the tantalizing treasure was concealed right here in New Mexico.

What in the world was he thinking? Fenn was diagnosed with kidney cancer and told it was terminal - absolutely nothing he could do except prepare to die. As a kid, Fenn loved nature and hiking through national parks and forests. As an adult, he had amassed a large fortune in art over his lifetime. He got an idea... Hide a treasure so people will get out into nature, look for it, and maybe learn to appreciate the beautiful landscapes along the way. It was to be his last great adventure, but ironically he beat the odds and is still alive today.
Many people have been looking - in fact, there is a whole subculture of treasure hunters who've been combing the wilderness for years. Lured by Fenn's seemingly simple poem that contains clues to its location, some (at least four) have died in pursuit of these riches,
The story got so big, and there were so many treasure hunters wandering about through canyons and mountains and going down the Rio Grande, that Josh Gates of
Expedition Unknown
(Travel Channel) came to Taos to do a show about Forrest Fenn's treasure. If you've ever watched the series, you know that Josh loves to throw in some local color and humor. That's where I come in.

Josh interviewed me dressed as Zorro on my horse (Patron) as I rode through the plaza. Now here's a funny tidbit of info...for the interview, they wanted me to take off my mask because it could be a copyright infringement (on Zorro). But they let me keep my sword! I swung it over my head with a flourish, and Josh looked nervous. Ha!

Fenn has said people have been within 200 feet of the treasure. Did someone find it? Would we ever know? Does a treasure even exist? I've heard questions asked quite a bit. I don't know, but I admit that when walking through NM's beautiful forests, I do keep one eye open for anything unusual that might be a clue. You never know...

As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold,
I can keep my secret where,
And hint of riches new and old.
Begin it where warm waters halt
And take it in the canyon down,
Not far, but too far to walk.
Put in below the home of Brown.
From there it’s no place for the meek,
The end is ever drawing nigh;
There’ll be no paddle up your creek,
Just heavy loads and water high.
If you’ve been wise and found the blaze,
Look quickly down, your quest to cease,
But tarry scant with marvel gaze,
Just take the chest and go in peace.
So why is it that I must go
And leave my trove for all to seek?
The answers I already know,
I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak.
So hear me all and listen good,
Your effort will be worth the cold.
If you are brave and in the wood
I give you title to the gold.

Speaking of music, I would be remiss not to say how
FANTASTIC
the Sting concert was on September 2nd.
He knocked it out of Kit Carson Park, so to speak. His hits from The Police and his solo career just kept coming. The excitement was electric, and the crowd stayed on their feet cheering him on. The town did a great job too in making sure everything ran smoothly, It was downright awesome!
