Autumn Festivities in Taos & ABQ

Taos is always buzzing with excitement in the fall, and this year is no different with loads of festivals, events, art openings, concerts, and don’t forget patio weather for margaritas. After an absence of a few years, Fall Arts kicked off the season, and opening night was bigger and better than ever with live music, food and three locations showcasing artwork.

I was thrilled when my painting, “Beauty of Community and Culture” (16x20), sold on opening night. Coincidentally, a week earlier, we received a licensing inquiry from the Mesa Verde National Park – they wanted to reproduce and display that painting in a permanent exhibit to help further their focus on community and cultural continuity. I was so honored, and we donated the image for them to use however they want. It's a pleasure to support our national parks... and so important.

Another fun event was Cultural Treasures: A Celebration of Place at the plaza and the historic county courthouse. There was a car show, food, live music including lessons in traditional dances, and a community showcase – each courthouse room featured a town/village and their unique culture via exhibits (acequias, weaving, farming, pottery, etc.). If you've never been in the courthouse, which has been closed for years for renovations, go in and see the historic painted murals on the walls. Really quite lovely.

But wait – there's a lot more fun! LOL. Last year, a couple won one of the two "Dinner with Ed" auction items at the Shared Table fundraiser, so we had them out for green chile chicken enchiladas. Then we headed to Albuquerque for a birthday party and family reunion. I've got a VERY large extended family, and I bet there were around 50-60 people there, chatting over a delicious New Mexican dinner and listening to Mariachi music. After spending the night in a funky, vintage-style Route 66 motel with lots of neon, we wandered around Old Town, did some shopping and had lunch with my daughter and her husband (Tammy & Edwin) at High Noon before heading to see Billy Idol. Whew!

And now for Billy Idol’s It's A Nice Day To… Tour Again! Okay, I have a confession to make. When Gwen started to bounce up and down, saying that Billy Idol was on tour in ABQ the night after the family reunion, I said excitedly, “Oh we should go! It’s Billy Idol!” In reality, I sort of knew who he was… but barely. I recognized a couple of songs, but not much else. Despite this, every time the subject came up, like about getting great seats, I kept repeating, “It’s Billy Idol!” – 100% implying that I was totally versed in his career/music.

Our seats were smack in the center, only six rows from the stage, and I realized quickly that while I’ve seen bands and shows, a full-blown, high-techno concert is something I’ve NEVER experienced. The throngs (~10,000?) of fans, light shows, 3-D backdrops, special effects and showmanship! It was a BLAST. Later, I admitted the truth – that I was clueless about the lyrics, but I did catch on during "Mony Mony" and sort of knew "White Wedding." After the fact, Gwen showed me his MTV videos and cameo in an Adam Sandler movie (The Wedding Singer). Wow! He's famous! Now I'm a FAN, but wish I'd asked and learned BEFORE the concert. Ha!

Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia

One final Ireland/Scotland adventure – touring the Britannia that's moored in Edinburgh. Launched in 1953, she carried Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family more than a million nautical miles and hosted all sorts of glittering state visits, swanky receptions, honeymoons (like Charles and Diana) and holidays. We got to explore five decks, including the Queen's bedroom, lounges, formal dining room, crew's bars and cramped quarters, engine room, etc.

We marveled at the formal areas like the dining room. More than 220 crew members did things like measure EVERYTHING to make sure all was perfectly aligned: chairs from table and one another, silverware, plates.... They also scrubbed and polished the deck every night (quietly!) so it would gleam each morning. Felt over the top, but they hosted notables: Churchill, Mandela, Thatcher, American presidents (Eisenhower, Ford, Reagan and Clinton) and celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor. Can you imagine?

We're not really "into" the Royal Family or their goings-on; however, it was fascinating to see how the Queen spent a goodly amount of her time, sailing from country to country and hosting so many distinguished and celebrated guests. We saw the sun room where Charles loved to paint, complete with an easel and one of his paintings, a huge laundry area (for keeping linens white and crisp) and even the medical/surgery facilities (looked so antiquated... like from MASH or Quincy). Interesting, but I prefer our NM high desert.
