College Connections
An electronic newsletter from the College of Pharmacy
June 26, 2023
| |
Dear Alumni, Colleagues and Friends,
The faculty, staff and students of the college often celebrate the end of an academic term with hopes that we can catch our breath, start planning for next year, and perhaps fit in a vacation. However, the summer season has not slowed us down, as many events have happened in the College since our last newsletter.
The College of Pharmacy recently served as host to Sheldon Holstad, PharmD, Associate Executive Director and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Foundation’s Mentored Research Investigator Training (MeRIT) and Focused Investigator Training (FIT) programs. The programs bring together experienced mentors and early-career faculty mentees from across the country to spur the growth of research within clinical pharmacy. The programs began with an immersive five-day experience at UNMC, June 12-16, and now transition into ongoing collaboration. Officially, the respective programs are a two-year commitment between matched mentors and mentees.
Of a quick note, the College received our latest research funding report. We are pleased to report our grants and contracts exceeded $15.4 million which is more than double our state aided budget. Finally, by the time you read this newsletter, the NU Board of Regents will have acted upon our Center for Drug Design and Innovation. More information to come in the next College Connections.
You will find more exciting stories in the newsletter in regards to our honors convocation, our distinguished alumnus and faculty awards.
Best wishes for a fantastic summer. Please feel free to contact me at keith.olsen@unmc.edu.

2023 College of Pharmacy's Distinguished Alumnus Award
Matt Nye ('83) recently retired as Vice President, Pharmacy Services for Blue Shield of California. Matt completed his residency at UC-San Francisco and then became part of the faculty in the UNMC College of Pharmacy. Matt returned to California as Drug Education Coordinator at Kaiser Permanente, the first academic-detailing position in the private sector. This program’s success led to the spread across Kaiser nationwide. Matt eventually became the Vice President, Pharmacy Care Support Services leading Kaiser’s clinical and pharmacy benefits functions nationwide. Matt is an avid supporter of clinical pharmacy services. He started Kaiser’s first ambulatory care pharmacy residency. “Residency programs are a great incubator for talented clinical and administrative pharmacists”, Matt said.
Matt was an author and sponsor of CA Senate Bill 1759 which allowed the broad practice of clinical pharmacy services in integrated health settings. Through his years at Kaiser, the organization grew to employ hundreds of clinical pharmacists practicing under collaborative practice agreements in MTM, anticoagulation, geriatrics, HIV and other conditions. In the early 1990’s, Matt led a team of investigators from Kaiser and the University of Southern California to determine the value of patient consultation. The randomized controlled study looked at a general consult at the front counter of the pharmacy versus a narrower, but more intense, intervention with patients at a higher risk of drug related problems. The study found the more intensive intervention significantly improved outcomes. The study earned the ASHP Research and Education Award.
Matt was widely known for developing very strong, high performing teams. Throughout his career, Matt led highly diverse, high-performing teams with different backgrounds and points of view. “One of the things I am most proud of is that two of my direct reports were promoted to VP at Blue Shield”, Matt said. In retirement, Matt still connects with the practice of pharmacy. He serves as an advisor to a technology company, Gemini Health, that integrates drug cost and patient cost-sharing into the electronic medical record. Matt stated that “my experience has been that if you get the right information to the physician at the point of prescribing then better prescribing decisions result”.

2022-2023 UNMC Faculty Senate Awards
On April 18, two College of Pharmacy faculty members were honored with Faculty Senate Awards.
Kristen Cook, PharmD, clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice and science received the Outstanding Teacher Award. When asked how do you know when you've been a successful teacher, Dr. Cook said "I feel most successful when I’ve worked with other educators to develop an innovative session, case or simulation that students are actively engaged in and walk away from feeling like they can better take care of patients. It’s important for learners to see educators work as a team, which helps them feel supported and invested in. I’m lucky that I get to work with fellow educators and students every day that value learning together."
Dong Wang, PhD, professor in the department of pharmaceutical sciences was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Graduate Students Award. Discussing his mentoring impact, Dr. Wang said "Most of my students have been very successful in their careers. Several of them are serving in different leadership capacities. I am pleased that I have been a positive influence on their career development."

Vada Kinman Oldfield Award
The Vada Kinman Oldfield Award for Research in Alzheimer's Disease was presented to Dr. Paul Trippier on April 19.
Dr. Trippier and his team regularly work on cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. “A lot of it is finding interesting protein targets, especially targets that haven’t been tried before that we think we can apply our chemistry to,” Dr. Trippier said. In doing so they came upon 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 10 (17beta-HSD10). It’s “a mouthful,” Dr. Trippier said. And it was a potential answer.
The enzyme 17beta-HSD10 binds to a protein known to aggregate in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, Dr. Trippier said. This binding stops the enzyme from working as it should. The literature suggests that the enzyme not working normally may lead to three major hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.
The team worked to create compounds that bind the enzyme target and prevent the disease-associated protein from doing so — “really get in there as early as possible in Alzheimer’s and prevent the toxicity,” Dr. Trippier said.
“So, we should hopefully have a protective effect." and "we’ve shown this in a number of cell lines and some (small animal model) neurons, as well, that this works.”

College of Pharmacy Spotlight
Highlighting a college alumni, student, and/or faculty member!
Today we hear from 2023 graduate Jack Steffen and 2004 alumni and preceptor Andrea Foltz! |
Jack Steffen, PharmD
Class of 2023
|
Where were you born and where did you go to high school?
I was born in Wayne, NE and attended Hartington Cedar Catholic School.
| | |
Where did you complete your undergraduate requirements for pharmacy school?
University of Nebraska Lincoln
What is your favorite part of pharmacy school?
My favorite thing about pharmacy school is the faculties willingness to help if you have questions. They are always available for you to stop by their office and talk through any problems you are having.
Have you decided where you might like to practice when you graduate?
When I graduate, I plan to return home to Hartington, NE and work at my family pharmacy.
If you could send a brief message to all of the people who donate to the UNMC College of Pharmacy, what would you say?
Thank you to all those who donate, you help to make this place a great place to learn. Without your generous donations, the UNMC college of pharmacy simply wouldn’t be the same.

Andrea Foltz, PharmD
Class of 2004
|
Please describe your path to becoming a preceptor for the College of Pharmacy.
During pharmacy school I worked in the In-Patient Pharmacy department at Nebraska Medicine, where I was very fortunate to have great mentors. I saw the way they treated pharmacy students and I knew that is what I wanted to be when I graduated. I wanted to help mold the future students, like they did for me.
How many years have you served as a preceptor for UNMC?
I have served as a primary preceptor for 14 years.
| | |
Please describe your practice site, including the location. What special things do the students get to learn from you?
Our practice site at Methodist Fremont Health is unique because we are a hospital rotation, but a smaller hospital that allows the students to see other sides of pharmacy. For example, they get to go to our physician clinics and see diabetic patients as well as see patients for medication assistance or medication therapy management. We also have monthly counseling sessions with our patients that are attending cardiac rehab, which is another way to interact with patients.
What is the most rewarding part of being a preceptor for the College of Pharmacy?
The most rewarding part for me is working with the pharmacy students on a daily basis and getting to see their passion for our profession. I love seeing their confidence grow during their four weeks with us. They really help keep me invigorated about our profession because I know the future is bright.
If you could give one message to our current students, what would you say?
I would say don’t ever say never because life changes and takes you down different paths and you need to do what is best for you, the profession of pharmacy is so expansive for job opportunities. Choose the job that is right for you at that time in your life but don’t be afraid to change lanes if life changes.
