Just before colleges started their 2023-24 academic year, our newly matched mentors and their college freshmen mentees met for the first time! These College Now and Say Yes scholarship recipients and their volunteer mentors will nurture their relationships throughout the entirety of each student's postsecondary journey, fostering mutual learning and growth. Special thanks to our board member and mentor recruitment committee chair, Felicia Williams, for serving as emcee at the event.

College Now Programs

Navigating federal student loan repayments 


Recent legislation will end the pause on federal student loan payments, with interest restarting on September 1 and payments resuming on October 1. College Now's Adult Programs team, led by Bailey Capelle, director, and David Burke, manager, is available to help. With their extensive experience, Bailey and David are sharing advice and tips to help untangle the web of federal student loans. 2023 Cleveland Foundation College Now Top Scholars trip


The newest members of the Cleveland Foundation College Now Top Scholars program ended their summer in the program’s yearly trip, exploring various colleges and universities throughout Pennsylvania and New York, including Syracuse, Columbia and Carnegie Mellon universities! These top academically performing Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) students, entering their senior years, receive personalized and comprehensive college and career guidance, enabling these students to secure admission to highly competitive colleges and universities.

College Now receives AmeriCorps grant for mentoring


College Now has been awarded funds from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. As the only Ohio-based organization awarded a grant from the AmeriCorps Volunteer Generation Fund, College Now will recruit and train 600 new volunteer mentors for its impactful mentoring program! Special thanks to U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown for highlighting College Now’s award in a recent press release.

AmeriCorps College & Career Guides


Our College Now AmeriCorps members are gearing up to make a difference this school year! AmeriCorps members of the Ohio College & Career Guides Program from across the state joined together for a swearing in ceremony to pledge their service to their local communities for the next 11 months. They will work alongside CMSD College Now advisors to guide middle and high school students through college and career preparation.

College Now secures three 21st Century grants to partner with the Cleveland Guardians and expand high school programs


College Now has been awarded three new Ohio Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center grants for the next five years! College Now will operate our impact! college entrance exam prep and career exploration program for CMSD high school students with the Cleveland Guardians! The Guardians will provide career exploration support and other opportunities that will help students explore the different careers that are available within the Guardians organization.


Additionally, we are excited to expand impact! for high school students in Wellington (Lorain County) and Mansfield.

Xplore Program featured on WKYC's We the People


Thanks to a generous grant from Third Federal, College Now plans to introduce its career and college exploration program to students in the Slavic Village neighborhood of Cleveland. This program, known as Xplore, is designed to emphasize college and career preparedness. Watch as Kate Schwab, College Now’s senior director of advising programs and services, is interviewed on WKYC’s We the People about this exciting initiative!

Cleveland Goes to College Fair- Tuesday, September 26


CMSD, College Now Greater Cleveland, Say Yes Cleveland and the Higher Education Compact will host the annual Cleveland Goes to College Fair on Tuesday, September 26, from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. at East Professional Center. This event provides the opportunity for local students to meet with colleges and universities to think about life after high school. We encourage you to spread the word to your networks!

College Students: Apply to Propel Ohio Student Leadership Conference - Due September 5 



The Office of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown is accepting applications for the Propel Ohio 2023 Student Leadership Conference! This in-person event on October 6 will focus on civic engagement and finding one's "why." This is a fantastic opportunity for college students to nurture leadership skills and civic engagement, inspiring them to make positive impacts on their communities and beyond. Applications for this conference will be accepted through September 5. We encourage you to spread the word to qualified college students!
