Dear Friends,
As we kick off this new school year and I reflect on our family nights, I couldn't be more hopeful. I want to share a few things I am especially excited about:

  • We are setting up college savings plans for our scholars! We are in the process of supporting all interested Charting Careers families with establishing 529 College Savings Plans for their scholars and pursuing matching contributions from the state, up to $500 per year! If you are interested in helping fund the initiation of 529 plans, please donate.

  • We are returning safely to in-person programming! In October, we will begin in-person group programming. Through our partnership with Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM), we will offer our elementary and middle school scholars after-school wellness and college & career readiness programming at one of the AMM locations. Our scholars will also benefit from AMM's fantastic environmental stewardship curriculum.

  • We are continuing to build relationships with families! This month, we held Family Orientation Nights in key Annapolis communities. It has been an absolute pleasure to spend in-person time connecting with and listening to scholars, parents, and caregivers. We've been hearing about families' excitement to be a part of our Charting Careers community, as well as about the struggles and anxieties associated with returning to school and the lack of dependable transportation to and from school. These conversations will help us work together as a community to find solutions and overcome challenges.

We are so grateful to the many donors and volunteers who make it possible for us to support and partner with scholars and their families!

With gratitude,
Erin Snell, PhD

Executive Director
The Charting Careers community mourns the loss of Mrs. Christy D’Camera. Christy, or “Miss Christy”, as called fondly by so many youth and families, served as founding Mentor Coordinator and High School Program Director for Charting Careers from 2018-2019. Christy was passionate about our mission and touched so many Annapolis families with her warmth and commitment to connect students and families to resources and to each other. Christy's signature curly, blond hair and radiant smile are easy to spot (as seen in the picture above), and her loving spirit will be deeply missed. We will remember and honor Christy through our continued commitment to mentoring and to linking youth and families to mental health resources. Please, find Christy's online tribute here.
Charting Careers is honored to have received a grant from Anne Arundel Women Giving Together (AAWGT). Our Executive Director, Erin Snell, and Director of College & Career Readiness, Leon Thomas, III, had the pleasure of attending the September 2021 AAWGT Grants Showcase during which 2020 grant recipients shared their progress and new grantees shared information about their organizations and grant project plans.

Erin and Leon were pleased to meet so many wonderful women involved with AAWGT and to see many other partners, including Dominique Scurry and Rita Dorsey with Newtowne Community Development Corporation (pictured with Leon above) and Toni Pratt with People Builders Consulting and My Sistah's Keeper.

Ron-Shaye Clark, M.E.G.A. YOUTH Leader and Charting Careers Community Navigation Specialist, and her team bring to life the familiar tale of the magical land of Oz and its inhabitants, visitors, and the occasional flying monkey, all showcasing the talent of a cast of adults and children right here in Annapolis, including some of our very own Charting Careers scholars and staff!

The Wiz "From Pandemic to Promising" is the story of The Wizard of Oz told in a fun and funky style, making the show truly enjoyable for the entire family. Yet, it isn't just song and dance. The show has such depth and meaning with each song you hear in the show. "It's about having the courage to admit that you CAN do what you're set out to do, having the brains to realize it and the heart to follow it through."

As part of this partnership, Arundel Lodge social workers are building relationships and trust with Charting Careers scholars and families; reducing stigmas associated with receiving mental health services; helping to ensure a smooth therapy referral process; and much more.

This project is funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County.
