2020 Summer Internship Program
Since 2015, the Economic Club has provided professional development opportunities to scholars through the Summer Internship Program. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the program pivoted to a virtual platform throughout the summer of 2020. In partnership with Urban Alliance, 20 host organizations provided an unforgettable experience for 24 of our scholars.
At the end of their paid internships, scholars participated in a Public Speaking Challenge which gave them an opportunity to create a presentation and share their overall summer experiences. Economic Club Members provided valuable feedback and encouragement while serving as judges for the Public Speaking Challenge. This year, Vice President of Education, Gina Adams, Senior Vice President, Government & Regulatory Affairs, FedEx Corporation, provided remarks during the opening ceremony of the program, challenging scholars to “seize the momentum of a changing world” by continuing to change and grow during these unprecedented times.

The David M. Rubenstein/ Economic Club
of Washington, D.C. Scholarship
The David M. Rubenstein/Economic Club of Washington, D.C. Scholarship application is completely online for the first time ever. High school seniors interested in applying will be able to access the scholarship from our website starting November 16th. Since 2009, the scholarship has awarded more than $7.5 million to 548 district high school students. Recipients consist of students from both public and charter schools in the DC area. Each year, about 50 selected recipients receive the $20,000 scholarship upon nomination by a participating school, who make recommendations through an internal committee review process. Along with this $20,000 scholarship, students are supported by member-driven initiatives including internships, mentoring, leadership seminars, and other opportunities.

COVID-19 Supports for Scholars
In an effort to continue to support our scholars as they navigate through these challenging and uncertain times, the Economic Club has created a Scholar Emergency Micro-Grant Fund, which provides funding for students that are experiencing financial hardships as a result of the pandemic. This includes, but is not limited to housing, food, transportation, storage, technology for school, and more. To date, 98 scholar applications have been received and granted in excess of $43,000.
The Capital Explorer Fund launched in 2017 to help Economic Club scholars learn beyond a typical classroom setting. The purpose of this fund is to provide financial support to scholars wishing to complete an internship, research project, volunteer program, or similar opportunity that is meant to advance the scholar’s academic and professional growth during their college education. This year, three scholars – Amaya Suarez-Findlay, Bakari Sibert, and Dominique Landinez – were able to take advantage of this program despite the current pandemic. Each student participated in virtual courses or internships as an alternative to their initial plans.
Amaya Suarez-Findlay was initially accepted into the University of North Carolina Greensboro’s “Spanish through Community Engagement Summer Study Abroad Program in Costa Rica” and was able to pivot, taking two communication courses virtually during the summer of 2020.
Bakari Sibert expected to study abroad at the University of Arts in London where he would have taken a course exploring textile fabric workshop-design. Bakari switched gears and was able to take two virtual courses focusing on fashion textile design and sustainable textiles at Saint Martin College in London.
Dominique Landinez accepted an unpaid internship through the Center for Brain and Cognition at the University of California, San Diego. Fortunately, she was able to complete her internship virtually, working under world-renowned neuroscientist Dr. Vilayanur Subramanian Ramachandran.

Alumni Scholar Engagement and Spotlights
We continue to have strong alumni participation in virtual mentoring and professional networking opportunities. The Alumni Leadership Council (ALC) is a leadership development opportunity for alumni of the David M. Rubenstein/Economic Club of Washington, D.C. Scholarship program who have graduated from college. These young professionals work together and with Economic Club staff to plan engaging events and help support programs for current scholars.

Rev. Jonathan Wade (2011 Scholar)
Jonathan Wade holds a B.A. degree in Philosophy from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and a Master of Divinity degree from Howard University. He is an active member of the Economic Club Alumni Leadership Council and mentor to current scholars. When asked about his connection to the Club as a scholar and alumnus he said, “The Economic Club has been a training ground for me, it has been a foundation and support to get me through college, but still provides support in my growth and development as a leader. The transition from scholar to an alumnus has been meaningful and impactful as it guides me to develop my own leadership skills and continue in community service by supporting other scholars.” Read more about Jonathan here.

Ede Ashton-Scott (2014 Scholar)
Ede Ashton-Scott is a 2018 graduate of Delaware State University where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. She played the violin for 15 years, which compelled her to explore a career in the performing arts industry. As a scholar, Ede participated in the Economic Club Summer Internship Program and worked with Washington Performing Arts. Ede believes “If it were not for the backing of the Economic Club, I would not have been able to secure a paid internship at the place I’ve always wanted to work. The Economic Club offers scholars so much - they just have to take advantage of the opportunities before them." Read more about Ede here.
