DEAN'S MESSAGE

Alum Advantage

OK, I am convinced! This place is special in large part because our alums are special. This week will mark 90 days in Nebraska, and I have had time to visit with alums from each decade, going back to the 1960’s! Each graduate shares their love for Big Red, the value of their education and their desire to give back. It is scholarship season, and we have our alumni to thank for the many gifts as they share from their surplus as well as from their deficit. What do I mean by gifts from their deficit? Beyond the treasure they share to endow scholarships, many of our generous alumni are still practicing, yet they support our college with the gift of time. When they share time mentoring and in project reviews, they share their most limited and therefore most valuable resource, their time. In my recent trips I have asked alumni to support our students with scholarships, as well as their talent and time. Every time I am greeted with an enthusiastic “yes!” and this is our advantage. Let’s remember to share our gratitude for these gifts.

Make it a great week!

·Be sure to discuss with University Housing how withdrawing may impact your housing eligibility.

·If your full-time or part-time enrollment is verified to receive discounts on your medical/car insurance or your parents’ health and auto insurance, withdrawing from classes may affect your eligibility for continued discounts.

COMMUNITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING

Last week, Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) students and faculty members Abigail Cochran and Zhenghong Tang traveled to Peru, Nebraska, to present the draft of their downtown revitalization and city economic development plan for residents and stakeholders. This semester, MCRP studio students engaged with Peru city leaders, stakeholders and residents to develop a downtown revitalization and greater economic development plan for the community. The residents, city leadership team and other stakeholders from Peru Sate College and Southeast Nebraska Development District participated in the meeting. The planning team collected feedback and suggestions for final plan development.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Last week during spring break, the landscape architecture faculty members were in high gear at the national Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) conference in San Antonio. Each core faculty, Sarah Karle, Yujia Wang and Salvador Lindquist presented two papers. These papers included content from both their teaching and research activities. It is quite a feat to have one hundred percent of your faculty present a paper at the national landscape architecture conference, but to have one hundred percent delivering two papers covering both core areas of faculty activity is evidence of the extraordinary quality of the landscape architecture faculty. Add to this, Lindquist was recognized for receiving the most coveted research grant offered by CELA, the CLASS grant. The director of the program, Mark Hoistad also was awarded the Triad Award recognizing service to the organization. Collectively the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Landscape Architecture Program is being recognized as a program on the rise with impressive achievements relative to its size in the academic community. It was clearly a week to be proud to be a landscape Husker.
