Walking the Way—

Living Tao in a Changing World

by Dr. Mao Shing Ni

The world has always been in motion, but rarely has change felt so sped up, unpredictable, and constant! It seems that technology evolves faster than wisdom and opinions harden faster than hearts can heal. Many people feel pulled between wanting to keep up and yearning to slow down. In such a climate, how can we truly walk the Tao?

The Tao—the Way—is a living current that flows through every age and its teaching is more relevant than ever. The Tao does not resist change; it moves with it. Just as water adapts to the shape of the land yet never loses its essence, we too are reminded to remain fluid and clear amid shifting terrain.

Modern life trains us to control: our schedules, our data, even our emotions. Yet the Tao teaches us to harmonize rather than to dominate. To walk the Tao is to listen—to our body’s quiet wisdom, to the heart’s subtle signals, to the rhythm of the natural world that hums beneath the noise. When we synchronize with that rhythm, the world outside may continue to move, but the world within begins to settle.

Unfortunately, polarization defines much of today’s discourse. But the Tao reminds us that all opposites are interdependent: light and shadow, success and failure, joy and sorrow. Embodying the Tao means learning to see the whole, not just the half that comforts us. It means widening our heart’s capacity for empathy and that conflict is regarded as a teacher.

In the Western culture, we are obsessed with productivity and often mistake action for meaning. Taoist cultivation leads us to realize that true action arises from stillness, and clarity from emptiness.

Qi Gong, Tai Chi and meditation are practices that recalibrate our being and return us to the source from which appropriate action flows. When we act from that center, our choices can align with nature’s wisdom.

To live the Tao in modern times is also to serve: to bring balance to our families, workplaces, and communities through our being and compassion. The healer, the teacher, the leader—all are called to embody virtue, transforming our personal cultivation into collective healing. And we are definitely in need of that!

Taoist principles are not abstract. They are lived in each moment—we pause before reacting, breathe before speaking, and listen before judging. Walking the Tao in a changing world means transforming uncertainty into curiosity, fear into flexibility, and conflict into compassion.

This is the spirit behind our upcoming retreat, “Walking the Way — Living Tao in a Changing World,” where we will gather to cultivate harmony and learn that renewal is natural and that peace begins within.

Join us April 22 - 26, 2026 in the mountains of North Carolina, where silence teaches better than words, where breath and nature meet, and where together we can rediscover how to walk the Tao—one mindful step at a time.

Viewing Marburg’s Three Purities Scrolls

Group Report

A small group of us went to historic Marburg, Germany in September 2025 to view the Three Purities Scrolls that Hua-Ching Ni’s books refer to. In the early morning hours, we practiced Tai Chi together in the old botanical garden. Later in the day, we studied the scrolls of the Three Purities at one of the oldest universities in Europe. Compared to their surroundings, the paintings were relatively young, dating back to copies from the early 1800s. Yet, the theme of the scrolls must be much older, judging by the clothing in which the Three Purities were depicted.

One Spiritual Reality

Chapter 38 - Sound Healing and Visualization for Internal Training… With the Effect of Pacifying the Mind and Strengthening the Body

Pages: 246, 247 and 248

Attune the Internal Life through Vibration

Vibrations for the Three Origins of Life Visualizations and Vibrations

for the Seven Palaces

This month's book selection is from Alannah Fitzgerald.

What inspired me to choose these passages, was simply what my intuition and opening the book randomly led me to. It so happens this topic is of great personal interest, as I’ve been aware for a very long time that everything in the Universe is energy and different energies vibrate at different frequencies, whether sound, color, etc.

“Sound healing stimulates the internal organs through vibration as each sound affects a different internal location. This is very different from just reading the sounds". Master Ni and Dr. Mao talk about "letting the sound conduct the healing. It can help you stay healthy, as well as eliminate sickness. All those who are good at using sound healing can safely attune their internal chi, but keep in mind that these practices were also developed for spiritual purposes.”

I am interested in learning more about Visualizations and Vibrations for the Seven Palaces as shown on pages 247 and 248. “These are located at the seven hubs on the vertical line of the body. The associated characters and colors are visualized on the middle line of each hub or chakra".

My questions for discussion are:

1. In what ways, in addition to healing the body and attuning internal chi, do these practices benefit a person’s spiritual development?

2. Can we practice some of these sounds together to get a feel for the sound pronounced correctly and for efficacy?

3. What is a way in which a person may identify an internal organ(s) or center/location as needing healing if one is unaware of it?

Thank you!

Brothers of the Heavenly Way

BROTHERS MEETING

October 14, 2025 Summary

When you practice, be sure to relax. This instruction is very important. The subtle essence holds no tension and that is what we are cultivating. If you are too tight, you will miss the delicate, refined energy. Likewise, if you are too loose, you will not firmly connect with it. Attune your awareness to the most refined energy. If your mind is wandering or you’ve brought too much emotional turmoil to your practice, you need to calm that down before beginning. Quietude can help you find the tranquil energy between tightness and looseness. Use your nervous system as your tuning fork. Morning is the best time to cultivate. Not only is the day’s energy fresh and clear, you are fresh and clear too. Daily life can cause inner turmoil. So when you practice in the afternoon or evening, you should find time to settle down first and fully relax. There is no end to the depth of tranquility that can be found and nurtured.

Freedom from Form

By Jason Moskovitz, 2025 Harmony Tai Chi Retreat, Oregon

Studying the physical movement of tai chi is what initially inspired me to memorize all 108 steps of Harmony Style Tai Chi. After several years of study and also several visits to the Medford, Oregon College of Tao retreat center I am now certified in the first 58 movements. After this very recent accomplishment, I am seeing my focus change. Beyond the promises of teaching tai chi or further refining movements, I can feel my study expanding beyond just the physical and practical.
