Dear Families,

As we wrap up the first four months of the school year, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. There is so much to celebrate and appreciate, and I am grateful for each of you. Together, we’re building a vibrant environment where students can thrive and are deeply committed to providing the best educational experience for every child.

As we strive to fulfill your expectations, your feedback is invaluable to us. We invite you to share your thoughts in our Mid-Year Survey, which is open until December 13. Your insights help us continue to improve and strengthen the educational experience for all students.

The next few weeks will be filled with cherished traditions and memorable activities that bring Beyond the Book experiences to our students and bring our community together. Upcoming events include our Grandparent/VIP Day, Middle School Science Day, 4th and 5th-grade assemblies, 3rd and 4th-grade student trip to Washburn University for STEM activities, the 2nd-grade Apple Valley Graduation, 1st-grade TARC donation pajama day, and a special Middle School Advisory Gingerbread activity for families. We’ll also have our Middle School Dance and a 3rd-grade student trip to The Nutcracker, all before winter break on December 20.

Thank you for being an essential part of our school family. I look forward to sharing this season of learning, joy, and community with all of you!

Sincerely,

Lyn Rantz, Ed.D. P'19, P'21

Beyond the Book

To honor Veterans Day, students and staff recognized the veterans in our community with a memorable, hour-long program. Each branch of service received recognition through a special musical number, and a panel Q&A session featured veterans from Topeka Collegiate families. Early childhood students also created art to be shared with our local VA.

On Wednesday, in observance of Native American Heritage Month, Mr. Dennis Rogers presented to students grades Pre-K - Grade 8.

Inclement Weather/Snow Days

As we approach the potential of winter weather, we wanted to call your attention to the inclement weather section of the Family Handbook.

Topeka Collegiate will determine a school closing with the safety of students, families, and employees as the priority. Although we will not follow Topeka USD 501 and Washburn Rural USD 437 closings, their decision to close will be considered when determining a school closing.

There may be days we decide to have a delayed start time to allow road conditions to improve.

Beforecare will not be available before a late start.

Topeka Collegiate will communicate a closing through a parent alert text and local media. Every effort will be made to communicate a school closing as early as possible.

*Families may pick up their child early due to driving conditions or an impending storm at their discretion.

From the School Nurse

As a reminder, Topeka Collegiate has COVID and Flu testing available on campus and at home. See this link for details.

CONNECT

Raising the Alpha Generation

Thank you to all the families who joined our recent Emerging Conversations event focused on Raising the Alpha Generation. We appreciate those who completed the follow-up survey. Here is a summary of the follow-up survey. Your engagement and thoughtful contributions have provided valuable insights into our community’s views and needs. We heard that 52% of you are very concerned about the impact of social media and smartphones on children, with another 28% moderately concerned. This indicates a strong level of interest and shared apprehension, which will guide our ongoing discussions and initiatives. Additionally, 40% of you are interested in a parent book club on this topic, and 47% would attend a school screening of The Social Dilemma—both potential avenues for fostering community support.

Your feedback on specific challenges related to social media and smartphone use included peer pressure, addictive tendencies, and difficulties in limiting device time. Some parents mentioned how quickly children become absorbed in devices, sometimes using them to self-soothe. We also heard concerns about online safety, potential future bullying, and difficulties maintaining screen time limits.

To support healthier engagement, many of you shared wonderful examples of how you encourage offline time and family bonding, such as outdoor play, sports, board games, and even creative initiatives like the 1000 Hours Outside challenge. In terms of school support, you suggested ongoing resource sharing, community agreements around device use, and possibly facilitating local, outdoor meet-ups for families. Many of you also expressed appreciation for the school's current no-phone policy and shared ideas for collaborative efforts to set shared guidelines and continue fostering responsible tech habits.

Thank you once again for your invaluable insights and for fostering a thoughtful, community-centered approach to raising the Alpha.
