Our Favorite Reliable Houseplants
Beat the winter blues by bringing tropical foliage into your home this month. Plants have been proven to improve indoor air quality, and are sure to lift your spirits during dreary winter days.
Here are our top 10 reliable houseplants, prized for being
low-maintenance and easy to grow...
5 Houseplants for Low Light
Snake Plant
(Sansevieria trifasciata)

Native to: Africa
Light: very low to bright; will not tolerate hot sun
Water: allow soil to dry thoroughly between waterings (leaves are succulent in nature and retain moisture well)
Notes: Very low-maintenance and easy to grow. Snake plants prefer to be slightly root-bound, so don't plant in a pot that's too large.
Heart-Leaf Philodendron
(Philodendron scandens)
Native to: Caribbean Islands, Central and South America
Light: very low to bright; will not tolerate hot sun
Water: allow soil to dry to the touch between waterings
Notes: One of the easiest houseplants to grow. Trailing or climbing habit; aerial roots will attach to wooden supports. Cut back if growth becomes leggy.
Chinese Evergreen
(Aglaonema modestum)
Native to: tropical Asia
Light: low to bright
Water: allow soil to dry to the touch between waterings
Notes: Very low-maintenance and a great choice for beginners. Silver, pink and red-leaved varieties available. Cut back if plant becomes leggy.
Parlor Palm
(Chamaedorea elegans)
Native to: Mexico and Guatemala
Light: low to bright; will not tolerate direct sun
Water: allow soil to dry to the touch between waterings
Notes: Very slow-growing, can eventually reach 3 to 4 feet tall. Prefers to be slightly root-bound.
Golden Pothos
(Scindapsus aureus)
Native to: Solomon Islands
Light: low to bright; leaf size and color diminish in low light
Water: allow soil to dry to the touch between waterings
Notes: Trailing or climbing habit; aerial roots will attach to wooden supports. Trim back for bushy growth
5 Houseplants for Bright Light
Fiddle Leaf Fig
(Ficus lyrata)

Native to: west Africa
Light: bright light; southern or western exposure is ideal
Water: allow soil to dry to the touch between waterings
Notes: Huge, fiddle-shaped leaves give this plant its name. Can grow into a large, dramatic tree if given the space and replanted into larger pots as needed.
Nerve Plant
(Fittonia species)
Native to: Columbia and Peru
Light: bright indirect (eastern or northern exposure is ideal); will not tolerate direct sun
Water: keep soil evenly moist; will not tolerate consistent underwatering
Notes: Low, spreading habit. Green, pink and red-leaved varieties available.
Arrowhead Plant
(Syngonium podophyllum)
Native to: Mexico and Central America
Light: low to bright indirect
Water: allow soil to dry to the touch between waterings
Notes: Fast-growing. Pinch back occasionally to promote bushy growth.
Rubber Plant
(Ficus elastica)
Native to: India and Malaysia
Light: bright; southern or western exposure is ideal
Water: allow soil to dry to the touch between waterings
Notes: One of the easiest houseplants to grow. Cut back to encourage bushiness if plant becomes leggy.
Split-Leaf Philodendron
(Monstera deliciosa)
Native to: Mexico and Central America
