Collier's Garden Scoop
July 2018

There's no mistaking the fact that summer has settled in across Alabama. Simmering temps & heavy air engulf the landscape but we've little to complain about with frequent rain so far. It's the height of the growing season & flowers abound, attracting beauties such as bees, butterflies & hummingbirds, adding to the wonder of the garden in July.

Black Eyed Susan
Rudbeckia hybrids
For sun to partial sun. Many varieties exist, bred from the native North American wildflower. One of the best perennials for the cutting garden. Divide clumps every few years to avoid overcrowding. Deer tend to leave these alone.
Coneflower
Echinacea hybrids
For sun to partial sun. Perhaps the most widely recognized North American native wildflower. Tough and durable. Divide clumps carefully every 3 or 4 years. Excellent cut flower and deer resistant. If left in place, bristly seed heads persist into winter and are loved by finches.

Daylily
Hemerocallis hybrids
For sun to partial sun. One of the easiest perennials to grow. Tolerant of neglect and drought. Dwarf, repeat-blooming varieties flower spring through fall. Divide in early spring or fall every 3 to 6 years. Cut stems containing buds will open over several days in flower arrangements.

For shade or filtered sun. Prized for their huge variety of leaf colors and sizes. A must-have for the southern shade garden. Produces tall white or lavender bloom spikes in summer that attract hummingbirds.
Ice Plant

Milkweed
Asclepias tuberosa
For sun or partial sun. Native to eastern North America. Large orange flower clusters emerge atop 3 foot tall stems. Adored and sought after by butterflies. Performs best with good drainage and regular water.
