Butterfly Weed
Asclepias tuberosa
A type of milkweed native to the eastern and southern US. Leaves are a food source for Monarch butterfly caterpillars (host plant) and the flowers provide nectar for many butterfly species. Best in full sun and needs at least half a day of sun. Heat and drought tolerant. Needs well-drained soil. Forms a clump 1 to 3 feet tall and wide. Does not transplant well once established, so is best left undisturbed once planted in the ground.
