Mexican Petunia
Ruellia brittoniana

Native to Mexico and the southwestern US. Hardy in Zones 7 and south (needs some protection and mulch in Zone 7 winters). Thrives in full or partial sun, in either wet or dry soil. Grows 3 to 4 feet tall. Varieties 'Purple Showers' and 'Mayan Purple' are sterile and do not re-seed. Spreads by underground roots to form large clumps when planted in the ground. Spreading and growth is intensified in wet areas. Great choice to use as an annual for height and color in large containers. Flowers attract both butterflies and hummingbirds.
Butterfly Weed
Asclepias tuberosa

A type of milkweed native to the eastern and southern US. Leaves are a food source for Monarch butterfly caterpillars (host plant) and the flowers provide nectar for many butterfly species. Best in full sun and needs at least half a day of sun. Heat and drought tolerant. Needs well-drained soil. Forms a clump 1 to 3 feet tall and wide. Does not transplant well once established, so is best left undisturbed once planted in the ground.
Gazing Globes

Reflective globes were first made of blown glass in 13th century Venice. They were popular in Victorian England and had a resurgence in popularity in the 1930s. Reflective spheres are striking tucked into flower beds or borders on a short stand, or placed on the ground. Smaller globes on stakes can bring visual interest to container gardens. They can be used as a focal point or surprise feature and will also float! Stainless steel gazing globes are a more durable alternative to glass for outdoors.
