Mums the Word
For Early Fall Color
Revive tired containers on porches, patios and near entryways with colorful garden mums. Available in shades of yellow, orange, red, purple and white. When budded and just 'cracking' color, like the one pictured here, mums will bloom for 3 or 4 weeks. Deadhead (trim off faded blooms) to extend flowering. Mums prefer at least 3 hours of direct sun each day and will tolerate 6 to 8 if watered regularly. Consistent moisture is the key to keeping your mums beautiful; repeated wilting stresses plants and can cause them to drop buds. Shop our best selection of mums during September and early October.
For the (Humming)Birds
Salvia
During the next two months, hummingbirds that have been living in our area this summer will begin the long flight south for winter. Why not help them prepare for the journey by adding flowers to your garden that they love to feed on? One of their favorites is salvia, and we have a great selection in stock, including annual varieties and some that are perennial when planted in the ground. All will bloom profusely until frost and provide much-needed nectar for our tiny feathered friends.
Perennial Pick
'Garvinea' Gerbera Daisy
This is one of our favorite reliable and long-blooming perennials! 'Garvinea' gerbera daisies have strong resistance to pests and diseases and are cold hardy to zone 7. Each plant can produce over 100 blooms from spring until frost (flowering may slow down during the heat of summer). Long, sturdy stems rise well above the lush, mounding foliage, making these a must-have for the cutting garden! 'Garvinea' gerbera daisies thrive in full or partial sun with well-drained soil and will grow 12 to 18 inches tall and wide.
Houseplant Highlight
Calathea
This member of the 'prayer plant' family, Marantaceae, is native to the tropical Americas and Africa. Calathea are prized for their highly ornamental leaves with interesting patterns and rich colors. They thrive in bright, indirect light (shield from direct sun), with regular water and high humidity. Hard brown tips or edges on leaves is usually a sign of underwatering. Protect calatheas from temperatures below 55 degrees. And good news for cat and dog owners- calatheas are pet-friendly! Pictured here: Calathea roseopicta 'Rosy'
