A Few of Our Favorite Tried & True Annuals
Add season-long color to outdoor living spaces by planting annual flowers and foliage. Continuous blooms also attract and support pollinators throughout the warm season. Here are a few of our favorite reliable annuals and some ideas for combining them in your containers or flowerbeds:
Idea Pot #1
Rainforest Shade Mix

for mostly shade (only 1 or 2 hours sun) or morning sun (shaded by 11)

water consistently for best growth
(not drought tolerant)

from top left: coleus, impatiens, fern, torenia, polka dot plant (hypoestes)
Coleus
All coleus grow well in shade. Some varieties can grow in full sun if watered consistently. 'Kong' coleus (pictured here) prefers shade or morning sun.
Polka Dot Plant
Along with caladiums and coleus, hypoestes offers color for deep shade where most plants won't flower. Pinch back as needed to keep bushy.
Torenia
An alternative to impatiens and begonias for flowers in mostly shade or morning sun with shade by 11. Attracts hummingbirds!
Idea Pot #2
Desert Shade Mix

for mostly shade (only 1 or 2 hours sun)
or partial sun (3 or 4 hours sun)

appreciates consistent water but will survive a dry spell (drought tolerant)

from top left: caladium, big leaf begonia, euphorbia
Big Leaf Begonia
This group includes dragonwing, babywing and 'Big' begonias, among others. Adaptable to mostly shade up to full sun. Very drought tolerant.
Euphorbia
Adaptable to mostly shade up to full sun. Mounding, spreading habit makes this a great "filler" in the garden that adds soft, delicate texture.
Idea Pot #3
Gemstone Sun Mix

dazzling shades of pink and purple accented by the glow of bright green

for full sun (6 to 8 hours)
or partial sun (3 to 4 hours)

heat tolerant but appreciates consistent water

from top left: dahlia, Persian shield, trailing vinca, jewels of Opar, Mexican heather

Mexican Heather
One of the most durable and reliable annuals. Heat and drought tolerant. Deer tend to leave this one alone!
Persian Shield
With large, showy and boldly colored leaves, this is a true "thriller" for the garden. Shown here with Joseph's coat.
Vinca
Provided well-drained soil (don't overwater), vinca blooms non-stop until frost, no deadheading required!
Idea Pot #4
Sky & Clouds Sun Mix

white, gray and shades of blue shimmer in the garden both day and night

for full sun (6 to 8 hours)
or partial sun (3 to 4 hours)

heat tolerant but appreciates consistent water

from top left: salvia, eucalyptus, angelonia, blue daze, million bells, dusty miller
Blue Daze
Sky-blue flowers and a trailing, spreading habit. Extremely hardy and heat tolerant. Will bloom non-stop until frost if watered consistently.
Dusty Miller
Shimmery gray foliage is the perfect accent to white, blue and purple flowers, or contrasts nicely with yellow and orange.
Salvia
Available in a variety of colors. All types attract hummingbirds and mealycup sage (pictured here) attracts bees and butterflies as well!
Idea Pot #5
Farmhouse Sun Mix

a cheerful, hardy mix with blooms that will delight the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds

for full sun (6 to 8 hours)
or partial sun (3 to 4 hours)

heat tolerant but appreciates consistent water

from top left: plectranthus, pentas, 'New Gold' lantana, 'Ragin Cajun' ruellia, Mexican heather
'New Gold' Lantana
Low, spreading habit in the ground. Will trail out of containers and hanging baskets. Attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds!
'Ragin' Cajun' Ruellia
Heat tolerant and durable. Mounding, spreading habit great for balancing taller-growing plants. Attracts hummingbirds like a magnet.
Idea Pot #6
Island Sun Mix

a bright, happy mix of citrus shades that sparkle next to vibrant purple with foliage textures adding extra interest

for full sun (6 to 8 hours)
or partial sun (3 to 4 hours)

appreciates consistent water but will survive a dry spell (drought tolerant)

from top left: crossandra, gomphrena, plectranthus, asparagus fern, trailing vinca, 'New Gold' lantana, euphorbia
Crossandra
One of the best options for adding a tropical look to the garden. Very heat tolerant and reliable. Attracts hummingbirds.
Asparagus Fern
Soft, airy texture with a spreading, spilling habit. Grows in shade or sun (requires consistent moisture in full sun).
Gomphrena
Reliable blooms and no deadheading required! Very heat tolerant. Attracts bees and butterflies.
