Colonial High School
CHS Community Member,

This past week we completed our first full week of instruction on both campuses. As we turn into week #3, we will begin with state testing. The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (F.A.S.T.) test is replacing FSA and is an assessment both our freshmen and sophomores will be required to take on Tuesday, August 23. If you or your student would like to interact with the online testing platform or review F.A.S.T. reading sample items at home, sample test materials are available at https://flfast.org/families.html. For more information about the F.A.S.T. program, please visit the portal at FLFAST.org.

We have several important events coming up this month and in early September (additional details further below in this issue). If you have a student at Colonial this year, I do hope you will join us for Open House and also participate in our monthly SAC meetings. Community involvement is a major part of our 2022-2023 school plan.

Thank you very much for reading this latest edition of the Colonial Connection and best wishes for a very successful week ahead!

Kyra Bandy Earns National Honor!
Kyra Bandy, Colonial FFA student has just been selected as one of 4 national finalists in the FFA Small Animal Production and Care Proficiency Award area. With a national FFA membership of over 735,000 members across the country, being selected as 1 of the 4 finalists is a great honor!

Kyra’s small animal production and care supervised agriculture experience project involves the care, breeding and raising of reptiles including the crested geckos and Hainan cave geckos. Her responsibilities include the feeding, cleaning and upkeep of the appropriate habitats as well as providing proper care for the gecko hatchlings. Some of these duties also include breeding insects to provide proper food to both the hatchling and adult geckos. Through this project, Kyra has been able to learn and expand her knowledge with reptiles, geckos in particular, and this project based learning has opened the doors to potential career opportunities in the future.

Kyra will now travel to the National FFA Convention in October, representing all of Florida, to compete against the other 3 national finalists for the top honor in this award area. She will present her project to a panel of judges and answer questions pertaining to her project. We wish Kyra the best of luck at the national convention!

Eligibility:
1) Physicals
All student-athletes MUST have a completed physical on AthleticClearance.com prior to participating in any tryouts. The physical process includes an EL2 (physical), EL3 (student and parent signature section), and an ECG. Physicals are valid for one year while only one ECG is needed for the duration of High School Athletics. All of the necessary forms can be found on AthleticClearance.com or the school's athletic website. Please note that the EL2 physical form is different than the school physical and a school physical will not satisfy the requirements for athletics.

2) Grades
All athletes must maintain a cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.0 or higher to be eligible for athletics. Freshman are exempt from this requirement for the first semester only since they do not have a high school GPA. Cumulative GPA’s are only updated at the conclusion of a semester so an ineligible athlete cannot become eligible until the following semester begins.

2) Female pilots by country. This might interest any of female Grenadiers, especially any US Air Force JROTC cadets, who might like to pursue aviation as a career:

3) Teens already spend over 8 hours per day on their devices outside of school. This article helps to explain why when students are at school we adhere to our cellphone policy to make sure that our Grenadiers are not distracted.
