The combination of rising inflation and interest rates has made going out to eat and the price of family entertainment a challenge. Please remember that Colonial offers some wonderful options at such values including all of our sports and performing arts programs. For instance, last week's fall chorus concert (above) and this week's theatre production of Dracula. If you have never taken in one of these venues, now is an excellent opportunity. I think you will be extremely impressed with the quality of the students' performances and they all provide the chance for some quality family time out of the house. For your consideration, please remember this week we have our annual "Boot Game" vs. University (away) and Dracula opens Thursday evening. While the Boot Game is away, the varsity football team would sure appreciate the support and Dracula is a classic!

** Superintendent Vazquez recently presented instructional make-up days due to Hurricane Ian. Instructional minutes already built into the student schedule throughout the year, allowed for the remaining instructional minutes to be made up by having Oct. 28 now scheduled as a normal school day instead of a student holiday/teacher non-work day and adding seven no-early dismissal Wednesdays between Nov. 2022 and May 2023.

Four times per year, the U.S. Department of Labor releases their quarterly analysis of weekly earnings for the nation's workers. As part of their research, they examine the relationship between median weekly earnings and levels of educational attainment. They just released their findings for the third quarter of 2022 on Tuesday, October 18th. While all the numbers will change over time, the basic pattern has held up over decades even through economic recessions — those with more education take home higher paychecks. The chart below illustrates this from the first quarter of 2000 through the third quarter of 2022 (grey bars are recessions):
|
|
|
Median weekly earnings for the 3rd quarter of 2022
- Less than a high school diploma: $692
- High school graduate, no college: $866
- Some college or associate degree: $993
- Bachelor's degree only: $1,452
- Advanced degree: $1,769
- Bachelor's degree and higher (a combined average to include bachelor's, master's, doctorate): $1,556
