"Rigor Outside of the Classroom"

CHS art students were chosen to attend Plein Air Appreciation Day hosted by the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens during the Winter Park Paint Out Festival.  Student artists learned about the artist, Albin Polasek while they toured the museum. They also learned about Plein Air painting (outdoor painting pioneered by French Impressionist artists) and created their very own plein air painting to take home!

Colonial High School

With members of the administration at the Prom last Saturday evening.
Seemingly in the blink of an eye, the month of April has nearly passed and we now turn the page into May. May is a very busy month with respect to our annual testing (calendar just below).

As we enter this testing period, I would like to suggest to our Colonial families an important reminder. Our students and their teachers have worked very hard all year to reach this point. In fact, their hard work reminds me once again of that famous quote by college basketball legend, Coach Bobby Knight:

"The key is not the will to win. Everyone has that. It is the will to prepare to win that is important."

And that is what our students and teachers have done - prepare to win. Whether you consider our scores of tutoring sessions, the ongoing benchmarking such as the progress reports we are releasing later today, or just the high quality daily lessons the teachers have delivered all year long - our Grenadiers are ready. There is no need to worry or for stress. However, on evenings before a test, our students should get a good night's rest and awake to a healthy breakfast making sure to arrive at school on time. These actions are still in front of them at this point and that is where we need our parents' help.

As for this issue, you will find several success stories which I am confident the community will enjoy. Have a good Monday morning and always remember . . .

"It Is Great To Be A Grenadier!"

Class of 2020: Opportunity Scholarships
College Board

The new @CollegeBoard #OpportunityScholarships program is awarding $5M in #scholarships to the class of 2020. There is no GPA or family income requirement. Students simply get rewarded for the work they're already doing to apply for college - opportunity.collegeboard.org

College enrollment has trended steadily upward for the past several decades, and since 2007, the year the recession began, enrollment has hovered above 65%.

The data show the long-term shift toward a knowledge-based economy, in which higher-paying jobs often require education beyond high school, whether a college diploma or trade certificate.

FFA
Grenadiers to be recognized at the State level!

Eleven seniors in our program will be recognized at the State FFA Convention for earning the State FFA Degree - the highest degree a student can receive in the Florida FFA Association.

In order to be eligible, students invested much time in their supervised agriculture experience projects, served in a leadership capacity, provided service for their community, and were involved in numerous educational activities beyond the local level. This is a significant increase for our program! (No students earned this distinction last year and only three the year prior.) The students include:
  • Brandon Banks
  • Luis Borges
  • Carmen Burner
  • Kaleb Carrillo
  • Jeyleane Diaz
  • Nicole Idarraga

AVID Scholarships
Three Grenadiers earn "Ford Driving Dreams" Scholarships!

As part of our senior AVID curriculum, students are taught how to effectively search for scholarships and are given time in class to draft essays and complete applications.  Weekly progress checks and scholarship completion are graded assignments.  Our Student Services team, including Ms. Perkins and Mr. Thompson, often share scholarships and resources with our students that they think are particularly fitting for the AVID students.

This past week, three of our AVID seniors were notified they earned the Ford Driving Dreams Scholarship, worth $2,000 each! We are so proud of Shynelis Nieves, MJ Ibrahim, and Evan Lorenzana for all of their hard work and accomplishments!

In the fall, Shy plans to attend either Franklin and Marshall in Pennsylvania or the University of North Florida. MJ will be attending Brandeis University in Massachusetts. Evan will start at UCF in the summer, where he has been accepted into the LEAD Scholars program!

The Lil' Grenadier (staff-to-staff recognition award)
Tracking the Lil' Grenadier over recent days . . .

The Lil' Grenadier is BACK ... after a much needed vacation with the "The Other Jones," as he needed to get a lot of rest, and do some major repenting. He needed some good old fashioned "kid" time as he joined a group of students, and our class pet, Douglas.

Then he found his way to where he really needed to be . . .

After repenting, he decided to head back to Colonial and deliver cap and gowns for some good community service forgiveness . . .

After feeling GREAT again, and ready to move on, the Lil' Grenadier found his way to the KINDEST, SMARTEST, GREATEST basketball coach and teacher that Colonial has ever seen - Mr. Josh Pavlicek!

Coach Pavlicek is a great roommate and friend. He teaches Cambridge students and leads them to greatness. I really think the Lil' Grenadier could not have found a better home for this week!

Monday's Motivational Moment!

THE DEFINITION OF REAL SUCCESS

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people

and the affection of children,

to earn the appreciation of honest critics

and endure the betrayal of false friends;

to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others,

to leave the world a bit better

whether by a healthy child, a garden patch,

or a redeemed social condition;

to know that even one life has breathed easier

because you lived.

That is to have succeeded.

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
