Colonial High School
CHS Community Member
Many members in our community may not be aware, but this past week was National Assistant Principals Week. As with high schools across the USA, Colonial's dedicated assistant principals play an integral part in keeping both of our campuses on track every school day. They have many daily as well as long-range responsibilities and will often take over curriculum, discipline, training, planning, and other important duties—sometimes with very little notice.

In this edition I wanted the community to see a few of the highlights as we celebrated our assistant principals last week. They have certainly earned this special recognition. Colonial's APs step forward every school day to help all of our Grenadiers either directly or indirectly, get the quality high school education they deserve. Therefore, in the coming days should you have the opportunity to interact with Mr. Cecere, Ms. Sweet, Ms. Roviaro, Mr. Maldonado, Ms. Conyers, Mr. Caliari, or Dr. Flynn kindly take a quick moment to say thank you. It would mean a lot as they have all done a splendid job this school year.

Please remember to mark your calendar for a performance of The Addams Family this week. We are fortunate to have a top Theater Department with so many talented students. This is one production the whole family will certainly enjoy so please, don't miss out!

Thank you for reading.

Cadets visit U.S. Coast Guard air station on Florida's Gulf coast:
Group photo from our Air Force JROTC’s visit to the Clearwater, Florida Coast Guard Air Station. The students had a great time learning about the Clearwater rescue mission and the career opportunities available within the U.S. Coast Guard!
Colonial community footnote: Largest and Busiest Air Station
The Clearwater Coast Guard Air Station our AFJROTC cadets just visited is the largest and busiest Air Station in the U.S. Coast Guard. In addition to the local west coast Florida area, their Area of Operations includes the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean basin, and the Bahamas. They constantly maintain deployed H-60s for Operations Bahamas, Turks and Caicos (OPBAT), a joint DEA, Coast Guard, Bahamian Turks and Caicos anti-drug and migrant smuggling operation in the Bahamas. They also use C-130s (pictured above) deployed in support of Joint Interagency Task Force (JIATF) operations in the Caribbean.

Colonial High School Wins 2nd In State!
The Florida FFA State Land Evaluation Career Development Event (CDE) was held on Friday, March 31, in Suwannee County, Florida. Over fifty (50) middle and high school teams from across the state competed for the chance to be named state champions.

A land judging team is comprised of 4 members and each of them have to properly evaluate 4 soil profiles on a tract of land. The students evaluate the soil profiles, determining the soil texture, organic matter, drainage capability, soil type, calculate the amount of surface soil lost from erosion, calculate the slope, determine several other mechanical and vegetative practices as well as determine the soil ph and amendments needed for the soil. Then, a “best land use” determination must be made by each team member. On one of the soil pits, the students are to determine the potential for a possible homesite and any drawbacks or issues that could deter this use, such as flooding potential, landscape issues, water runoff, erosion issues, etc.

We are very excited to announce that the Orlando-Colonial High School FFA Chapter won 2nd place in the state high school division!

By winning a top 5 state honor, we will now be recognized on stage at the Florida FFA State Convention and Expo this June.

Congratulations Grenadiers!

College Financial Aid: FAFSA Frenzy (April 14):
Colonial FAFSA senior completion percentage through late March:
Important Reminder for Colonial Seniors!
Nationally, 55.6% of last year’s high-school seniors completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a form that unlocks access to federal grants and loans and is often required for state and institutional aid as well. Sadly, aid experts say students who most need the assistance are least likely to apply for it.

In Florida, 58% of high-school seniors completed the FAFSA last year; those who didn’t left more than $100 million on the table in federal Pell grants, according to the Florida College Access Network, which works to increase FAFSA completion rates in the state.
