During the month of February, we celebrate both Black History Month and CTE Month (more on these in the coming weeks!)…and this week is also School Counseling Week – a week dedicated to celebrating the impact of Colonial's wonderful school counselors.
Whether they are helping students achieve academic success today or plan for the future, Colonial's counselors play an essential role in shaping and supporting our Grenadiers educational…and life journey. Unfortunately, much of the critical work counselors do every school day for our students is not as visible, so this special week means a lot. If you have the opportunity, kindly take a moment to thank your child's counselor or any of the professionals listed just below for their efforts. Hearing from our community means a great deal and would be tremendously appreciated.

Thank you for reading. Enjoy your week!

On January 28th, Ashley Bucher, a flute player in the Colonial High School Band, joined students from across Orange County and participated in the annual OCPS All-County Band Concert. Guest clinicians worked with groups for 7-8 grades, 9-10 grades, and 11-12 grades to rehearse and prepare advanced music over 3 days for a concert on the 4th day. Ashley's presence in the band represents her place among the top 10% of high school flute players in our district.

Over the weekend of January 27th and 28th, students from all over Orange and Seminole counties participated in Barnyard Bash, a multiple species livestock workshop organized and fundraised by animal science magnet junior Ashley Simmons. Students engaged in showmanship, exhibiting their ability to properly show and handle their animal and skillathon, a series of hands-on stations and exam over a topic selected by Florida State Fair- this year the topic was reproduction. Ranging from poultry, cattle, pigs, sheep and goats with exhibitors aging from 4 years old to high school seniors, this was a community event for the whole family!

As shown above in the chart, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the tuition and fee costs associated with obtaining an undergraduate education have greatly outpaced the general cost of living, as measured by the consumer price index, and median household income over the past few decades.

Monday's Motivational Moment!

Habits are what allow us to do a thing with difficulty the first time, but soon to do it more and more easily, and finally, with sufficient practice, do it semi-automatically, or with hardly any consciousness at all. Once we choose who we want to be, people grow to the way in which they have been exercised, just as a sheet of paper or a coat, once creased or folded, tends to fall forever afterward into the same identical folds.
If you believe you can change—if you make it a habit—the change becomes real. This is the real power of habit: the insight that your habits are what you choose them to be. Once that choice occurs—and becomes automatic—it's not only real, it starts to seem inevitable. Above all else, the will to believe you can change is the most important ingredient in creating belief that you can change your ways. And if you want to truly believe more in yourself, then work on your habits.

Rowling On Self Reliance
We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already.
~ J.K. Rowling, author
Tom Brady On Self Discipline
The more good behaviors you have, the better things turn out. It's just, do people have the discipline to repeat those behaviors? That's the tricky part.
~ Tom Brady, Super Bowl champion
Meyer On Time Management
Time is usually wasted in the same way every day.
~ Paul Meyer, author
Clint Eastwood On Resilience
If you're down, you've got to find your way to get back up. I don't know how to tell a person to do that. But I do know you have to be positive and keep working on it — don't give up early.
~ Clint Eastwood, actor
Emmons On Self Discipline
Habit is either the best of servants or the worst of masters.
~ Nathanael Emmons, theologian
