Colonial High School
CHS Community Member
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Magnet Fair last week. Please remember that the application deadline for the 2023-2024 magnet programs is fast approaching (Feb. 15, please see flyer below).

We are now on the cusp of February, a month into the 2nd semester, and student progress reports will be out on Feb. 9. The weeks are passing so quickly so I encourage all of our Grenadiers to make the most out of each instructional day keeping in mind that our student services team is always ready to help any student or parent if needed.

If you have never attended a live OCPS Parent Academy event, there is an opportunity to do so next Saturday at Boone High School. The live Parent Academies are only held from time to time and are extremely well done. If you have a student at Colonial, stop by the website and consider participating on Feb. 4. These events are packed with great information for our Colonial families and worth every minute. Food for thought.

Have a wonderful week and thank you very much for reading.

Excerpt from the Orlando Sentinel story:
Colonial did more than win a close quarterfinal game when 6-foot-8 Emmanuel Rislin made a go-ahead basket and then blocked two shots in the final seconds of a 49-48 win against Lake Brantley on Wednesday.

Colonial’s 14.544 rating, based on wins, losses and strength of schedule, ranked No. 1 in the region on Monday.

“We have eight seniors. This is one-and-done for a lot of us,” he said. “We started out 11-0. Then we lost three games at home [Jones, Wekiva and Master’s Academy]. We really needed this one.”

“We know we’re in the mix and they [Lake Brantley] are one of the heavy hitters,” Colonial coach Gary McDaniel said. “This is a big win for our FHSAA power ranking. We need a few more.”

This week is the final week of regular-season play.

Freshman Campus Fun Friday
As a reward on our freshman campus, students were able to trade in HERO points (positive points for exhibiting great behavior) for various prizes/activities during Fun Friday. Here are some of the highlights.
Debate Team
Last weekend our debate team competed at Apopka High School. Twelve of our students went head-to-head with the best debaters in Orange County. George Lacomb, a freshman, won third place overall and best novice in student congress! He beat out some of the best congress students in Central Florida.

Here is a list of all of our competitors:
Sahiry Vazquez, Shekinah Henriette, Elias Ortega, Isabella Rivera, Dex Martinez, Sarah Fernandez, Mauvy Ramirez, Ethan Mills, Ciara Lee, Maya Foster, Cadarian Russell, and George Lacomb.

Monday's Motivational Moment!
IF IT'S TO BE, IT'S UP TO ME.
This Monday means that we only have two days left for January with progress reports for the 3rd nine-week quarter coming out later next week. I hope that all of our Grenadiers have remained true to their 2023 goals so far this year and are finishing January with momentum.

As you review the progress you have made this month, be careful of making excuses if you are a little off track. Remember that an "excuse" is a justification for doing—or not doing—something. Basically excuses are given as a "reason." For example, you may say you are late to school due to traffic. The real reason you were late is because you left home without a enough time to allow for traffic. Excuses are never the reason for why you did or didn't do something. They're just a revision of the facts that you make up in order to help yourself feel better about what happened (or didn't). Making excuses for slipping on your 2023 goals or whatever won't change your situation; only getting to the real reason behind it can do it.

Please invest a few minutes today to review your goals and avoid excuses. All of our students at Colonial are loaded with potential and each has the ability to be successful. Remember Grenadiers, nothing happens to you; it happens because of you. As the old saying goes, "If it's to be, it's up to me!
