Congratulations to Coach Richardson and our Varsity Girls Basketball team on an incredible 2023-2024 season. While our Grenadiers did not win Saturday's state championship game, they once again played extremely competitive basketball and exercised excellent sportsmanship. To earn a spot as one of the two teams in the FHSAA Class 7A state championship, our Grenadiers first had to win a series of games vs. some of the top basketball programs in Florida. They played every playoff game with class and resilience and we could not be more proud of their consistent efforts. Thank you again Lady Grenadiers on a fantastic season and for representing Colonial High School in the way you did from the very first game.

The famous Green Bay Packers head football coach Vince Lombardi (the Super Bowl trophy is named in his honor) once said this to a reporter: "I have been quoted as saying, 'Winning is the only thing.' That's a little out of context. What I said is that 'winning is not everything -- but making the effort to win is.' He added, “Mental toughness is sacrifice and self-denial. Also, most importantly, it is combined with a perfectly disciplined will that refuses to give in.” We think Lombardi's outlook pretty well sums up the incredible work our Lady Grenadiers put in this year, so if you see any members of the team this week, please congratulate them on their season.

Please remember that the 2024 parent survey is now open to Colonial parents/guardians. If you have already taken a few minutes to complete the survey, thank you very much, and if not, would you kindly do so today? We rely upon the survey every year for our school improvement planning.

Grenadiers, please do not let up over these last four days before spring break (there is no school for students on Friday, March 15 and the following week is spring break, March 18-22). This 2023-2024 year is passing very quickly, so make it a successful week by taking advantage of every instructional day available to you.

Ethan Mills represents Colonial in the District's Congressional Debate
OCPS held its inaugural celebration of this day last week at the Ronald Blocker Education Leadership Center downtown. Each high school in our district was asked to bring one student to represent their school to compete in Congressional Debate, where students take on the role of senators and debate legislation. Our very own Ethan Mills was selected to represent Colonial High School. Not only that, he was the only student in the district to have his legislation added to today's docket. Ethan did a phenomenal job!

Curriculum Highlight
Flight Academy RPO students are learning what Machine Learning means and how it is used in drones.
  • Machine learning enables drones to go beyond simple, pre-programmed tasks, allowing them to understand, learn, and make decisions based on real-time data. AI-powered drones can adapt to their environments, recognize objects, avoid obstacles, and even perform complex tasks autonomously.

Our Flight Academy students are using their block time to learn about Algorithms & AI Applied Machine Learning with Catapults

The Machine Learning algorithm creates a mathematical model that can answer questions like “Is that a dog or a cat?”, and “What number is that?”. The mathematical model is created using data and becomes more accurate as it collects more data

Within this lesson, our drone students will create a mathematical model of a simple machine (the catapult). They will do this by building a catapult model and collecting data in order to answer the question: How can I predict the settings on a catapult needed to hit a specific target?

March Cookie Madness
March Madness is always a fun time each year as college basketball teams compete for the NCAA Championship. This year, to build a sense of community (and competition) amongst our staff members we created the March Madness bracket.

Each week, different cookies or Pringles will go head to head and teachers and staff will “dunk” their vote for their favorite flavor that round. Each round one will move on until the championship round where one will win it all! Each time a teacher votes they are entered into a drawing for a prize at the end of the month.

Which cookie or Pringle flavor will win it all this year?
