This is the week we welcome back our wonderful educators as the teachers return Wednesday morning to begin their pre-planning period. This is a special time we set out each summer for team building and preparation just ahead of the students' return.
Please remember that Thursday is Grenadiers Marching Back from 2:00pm to 6:00pm on both campuses (flyer below). If you will be attending Colonial this year or have a child that will be student, please make every effort to attend. This is a once per year opportunity that will help every one of our Grenadiers get the new school year off to a successful start.
With respect to Grenadiers Marching Back on Thursday, part of the event covers Colonial clubs, organizations, and extra-curricular programs. I mention this as there has been a number of articles in the news over the past couple of years about Americans feeling disconnected and lonely. In the wake of pandemic-borne social distancing, surveys have observed a ‘ loneliness epidemic’ across the US: in 2021, almost 1 in 6 Americans reported feeling lonely or isolated, with young adults nearly twice as likely to feel this way than those over 65. Last month, a YouGov survey found that, while 55% of Americans have between 2–5 close friends, 13% have just one, and a further 8% have no close friends at all.
I share these statistics as at Colonial High School, we never want any of our Grenadiers to feel disconnected or lonely—we have so many programs open to students. By attending Grenadiers Marching Back, you will have the chance to visit with faculty, counselors, and students to learn more about how there is something for every student to get involved with and by doing so, perhaps make a new friend or two along the way!
Thank you very much for reading and to our amazing teachers . . . WELCOME BACK!

Debaters make good citizens:
|
|
|
Excerpts from The Wall Street Journal article by Bo Seo:
Debate provides a tool kit for disagreeing better. Debaters learn to isolate the main elements of successful arguments: what is the point, why is it true, when has it happened before, who cares. They learn that arguments are most worth having when disagreements are real, important, specific and contested by two sides whose goals are aligned. They discover how to find the heart of a dispute.
This is another important lesson of debate: It is possible to build a community around, and not despite, disagreements.

Back to School Sales Tax Holiday
Runs through Sunday, August 6th

Back-to-school belt tightening: A reminder to our Colonial families to take advantage of the sales tax holiday as able.
Average spending per child on back-to-school shopping in the U.S. will fall 10% from last year to $597, marking the first decline since 2014. The 2023 Deloitte back-to-school survey points to inflation as the driving force. Shoppers are expected to replenish student necessities, such as basic school supplies, while holding off on nonessentials like tech and apparel. Still, six in 10 parents say they would be willing to splurge for the right reasons, like treating their child. Prices for school supplies have jumped nearly 24% in the last two years.

Vergara On Rejection
Never take no personally. Sometimes people tell you no for a reason that has nothing to do with you or maybe the timing is not right. You must keep going.
~ Sofia Vergara, actress
Franklin On Self Belief
Be your own artist, and always be confident in what you're doing. If you're not going to be confident, you might as well not be doing it.
~ Aretha Franklin, singer
Twain On Action
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
~ Mark Twain, writer
Rogers On being Thoughtful
There are three ways to ultimate success:
The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.
~ "Mister Rogers", TV host (Mister Rogers' Neighborhood)
Floyd On Teamwork
You don't get harmony when everybody sings the same note.
~ Doug Floyd, musician
