Thirty plates, all with tissue guards, of which 28 are in color using the Leighton Brothers Chromatic Process, two tinted lithographs, and 69 woodcuts in the text. Dedicated to Michael Faraday. George Cargill Leighton was a distinguished pupil of George Baxter who established polychromatic printing by the type-press in oil colors. Leighton took the craft to greater heights, his topographical views, printed in full colors from wood blocks were superior to those of Baxter. Toning, mostly marginal to some plates, raised bands, spine panels in gilt, original marbled endpapers -- lovely copy. Modern green morocco and marbled boards. Aeg. Fine. $320.00

Paris: Au Bureau du Journal, 1860-1863. First editions. 192, 192, 192 pages in text. Small folio, 30.5 x 22.5 cm. First to third years -- 72 issues in 3 volumes [April 1, 1860 - March 15, 1863]. More than 100 tipped-in or mounted color specimens of various dyes on paper, cotton, silk, metallic paper, felt, plant fibers, and more. One sample titled "Echantillod de Coton vert col de canard san indigo" (Vol. 3 #23, page 177 and described as "experience machevee" not present as in other copies and appears to have never been tipped-in (no trace of adhesive). Each issue in this set includes the first printed appearance of his lecture notes from "Cours de teinture des Gobelins." His color studies made him one of the most influential scientists in France during the early 19th century. He taught chemistry and ran the dying labs at the Manufactures Royales des Gobelins. In 1839, he published the results of his research under the title "De la loi du contraste simultané des couleurs;" It was translated it into English and published in 1854 under the title The Principles of Harmony and Contrast of Colors. His name is one of 72 inscribed on the Eiffel Tower. Some light spotting, mild edge wear, mostly unopened. Original printed wrappers -- yellow, gray and green. Very good. 3 vols. $2,400.00

London: Joseph Cundall, 1845. First edition. 32 pages. 18.5 x 13 cm. First edition of the first of Joseph Cundall's illuminated gift books, with decoration by John Brandard printed in chromolithography by Hanhart. Purportedly the first Christmas book printed in chromolithography. The borders in the book were copied from Harleian MS 2936 and MS 3469, Royal MS.19.C.3 and 19.C.8, the DeCroy MS, and Henry VIII's Missal, all in the British Library; also used was a Book of Hours in the possession of the publisher. Cundall was also the first commercially printed Christmas card in December 1843. MACLEAN, VICTORIAN BOOK DESIGN and Colour Printing. p.109. "It appeared in an elaborate embossed and colour-printed paper binding, in the French style..." Maclean also notes his career was hard to follow as he worked a great deal on his own. Originally published 1913 that expands upon the authors important brochure, Les premiers elements de la science de la couleur (Mulhouse, 1884) which had helped spread knowledge of Maxwell color disks, the adjustable colored discs, which when spun at high speed form a single color. Published at the height of Cubism it was inspiration for the color system of Julie Beaudeneau which, in turn, was used by Jacques Villon. - [See] A color bibliography, Yale Lib. Pyrography or pyrogravure is the free handed art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated source. Over 100 images. One of the oldest art form for cultures including Egyptians and some African tribes, "writing with fire" from the Greek pur (fire). The application was popular in the USA from the 1880's through the 1920's. Covers lacking small portions lower left and right corners. Buff wrappers lettered in black. Very good. $155.00

Chronological Table of the Monarchy -- the Merovingiens, Carlovingiens, and Capetiens. Mild dampstain title and last few leaves at lower corner. Plates fresh and bright, scattered light text toning. This is the earliest work on Madeira listed in [ABBEY189] with the note, "Originally published in half roan, latter remaindered by Nattali in cloth as here." A bright uncut copy, with Whatman paper dated 1821. Marston Library inscription on pastedown dated 1826, Richard Boyle Viscount Dangarvan armorial bookplate, and Joel Spitz bookplate with colored image of Henry Alken. Tiny bookseller label "Penny Bookseller, Cheap Street" front pastedown. Laid-in at rear is an eight page pamphlet By an Ex-Invalid, published London: Bell And Daldy, 1859 entitled "Madeira. A Brief Letter Of Advice To An Invalid, In Reply to A Request For Information About Madeira As A Winter Residence." Latter in fine condition. He notes, "You can see more misery in an hour in the streets of Bath, Cheltenham, and Torquay, than in Funchal in a whole season." The season is described as from October to May.
