ix chromolithograph plates, one wood engraving. The 20 pages represent publisher ads at rear. Originally published about 1866, this was a long popular manual. The Bacon manual stresses binary and triadic color harmonies unencumbered by the long disquisition's on aesthetics that mark most French treatises. Bright, very fresh copy. Yellow endpapers. 2. Barnard, George.

The Theory And Practice Of Landscape Painting In Water-Colours. Illustrated By A Series Of Thirty Drawings And Diagrams In Colours, And Numerous Woodcuts.

London: Hamilton, Adams, And Co, 1858. New and enlarged Edition. 286 pages. 25.5 x 18.5 cm. Thirty plates, all with tissue guards, of which 28 are in color using the Leighton Brothers Chromatic Process, two tinted lithographs, and 69 woodcuts in the text. Dedicated to Michael Faraday. George Cargill Leighton was a distinguished pupil of George Baxter who established polychromatic printing by the type-press in oil colors. Leighton took the craft to greater heights, his topographical views, printed in full colors from wood blocks were superior to those of Baxter. Toning, mostly marginal to some plates, raised bands, spine panels in gilt, original marbled endpapers -- lovely copy. Modern green morocco and marbled boards. Aeg. Fine. $320.00

Paris: Au Bureau du Journal, 1860-1863. First editions. 192, 192, 192 pages in text. Small folio, 30.5 x 22.5 cm. First to third years -- 72 issues in 3 volumes [April 1, 1860 - March 15, 1863]. More than 100 tipped-in or mounted color specimens of various dyes on paper, cotton, silk, metallic paper, felt, plant fibers, and more. One sample titled "Echantillod de Coton vert col de canard san indigo" (Vol. 3 #23, page 177 and described as "experience machevee" not present as in other copies and appears to have never been tipped-in (no trace of adhesive). Each issue in this set includes the first printed appearance of his lecture notes from "Cours de teinture des Gobelins." His color studies made him one of the most influential scientists in France during the early 19th century. He taught chemistry and ran the dying labs at the Manufactures Royales des Gobelins. In 1839, he published the results of his research under the title "De la loi du contraste simultané des couleurs;" It was translated it into English and published in 1854 under the title The Principles of Harmony and Contrast of Colors. His name is one of 72 inscribed on the Eiffel Tower. Some light spotting, mild edge wear, mostly unopened. Original printed wrappers -- yellow, gray and green. Very good. 3 vols. $2,400.00

London: S. and J. Fuller, 1814. First edition. 32 pages in text. 28.5 x 46 cm. Second issue, 24 soft ground etchings, 16 uncolored aquatints, and sixteen hand colored aquatints, and sixteen hand colored etchings on gray backgrounds. Some pale foxing to the soft ground etchings, rubbing to backstrip and cover extremities, Joel Spitz bookplate (color portrait of Henry Alken). Considered one the important early drawing books. ABBEY LIFE 115. "The beginning of David Cox's numerous publications on water-colour painting." 19th century three quarter red morocco, leather title inset front cover lettered in gilt. A Booke Of Christmas Carols, Illuminated from Ancient Manuscripts In the British Museum.

London: Joseph Cundall, 1845. First edition. 32 pages. 18.5 x 13 cm. First edition of the first of Joseph Cundall's illuminated gift books, with decoration by John Brandard printed in chromolithography by Hanhart. Purportedly the first Christmas book printed in chromolithography. The borders in the book were copied from Harleian MS 2936 and MS 3469, Royal MS.19.C.3 and 19.C.8, the DeCroy MS, and Henry VIII's Missal, all in the British Library; also used was a Book of Hours in the possession of the publisher. Cundall was also the first commercially printed Christmas card in December 1843. MACLEAN, VICTORIAN BOOK DESIGN and Colour Printing. p.109. "It appeared in an elaborate embossed and colour-printed paper binding, in the French style..." Maclean also notes his career was hard to follow as he worked a great deal on his own. Paris: Dunod, 1934. Duxieme Edition. XV, 247 pages. 24 x 16 cm. Eight full page color lithograph plates, 53 text illustrations. Originally published 1913 that expands upon the authors important brochure, Les premiers elements de la science de la couleur (Mulhouse, 1884) which had helped spread knowledge of Maxwell color disks, the adjustable colored discs, which when spun at high speed form a single color. Published at the height of Cubism it was inspiration for the color system of Julie Beaudeneau which, in turn, was used by Jacques Villon. - [See] A color bibliography, Yale Lib. Second volume with some foxing, offsetting to text, apparently the set scarcely opened with interior contents fresh and clean overall. Front cover decorated in blind and gilt, latter bright and sharp, raised bands, spine richly gilt decorated, panels design in gilt florets, white silk moire endpapers, light wear to spine bottoms. Philadelphia: F. Weber & Co., ca1900. 46 pages. 20 x 25 cm. Pyrography or pyrogravure is the free handed art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated source. Over 100 images. One of the oldest art form for cultures including Egyptians and some African tribes, "writing with fire" from the Greek pur (fire). The application was popular in the USA from the 1880's through the 1920's. Covers lacking small portions lower left and right corners. Buff wrappers lettered in black. Very good. $155.00

Landscape octavo, 13 x 22 cm. 28 hand-colored plates, all with multiple images per plate, depicts the history of the French monarchy in costume, beginning with the reign of Pharamond through to Louis XVIII. Chronological Table of the Monarchy -- the Merovingiens, Carlovingiens, and Capetiens. Mild dampstain title and last few leaves at lower corner. Plates fresh and bright, scattered light text toning. Orig. vellum backed pictorial boards with moderate wear. Very good. $300.00

A History Of Madeira. With A Series of Twenty-seven coloured Engravings, Illustrative Of The Costumes, Manners, And Occupations Of The Inhabitants of that Island.

London : R. Ackermann, 1821. First edition. 118 [2] pages. 28 x 19 cm. Hand colored title vignette and 27 aquatint full page plates (all vignetted, except No. 27). This is the earliest work on Madeira listed in [ABBEY189] with the note, "Originally published in half roan, latter remaindered by Nattali in cloth as here." A bright uncut copy, with Whatman paper dated 1821. Marston Library inscription on pastedown dated 1826, Richard Boyle Viscount Dangarvan armorial bookplate, and Joel Spitz bookplate with colored image of Henry Alken. Tiny bookseller label "Penny Bookseller, Cheap Street" front pastedown. Laid-in at rear is an eight page pamphlet By an Ex-Invalid, published London: Bell And Daldy, 1859 entitled "Madeira. A Brief Letter Of Advice To An Invalid, In Reply to A Request For Information About Madeira As A Winter Residence." Latter in fine condition. He notes, "You can see more misery in an hour in the streets of Bath, Cheltenham, and Torquay, than in Funchal in a whole season." The season is described as from October to May. Also laid-in an ALS to Joel Spitz. COLAS 1255. LIPPERHEIDE 1581. TOOLEY 150. Orig. dark green roan and brown boards, backstrip lettered and decorated in gilt. Volume II: photograph of Braque by Man Ray, plus photographic plates by George Detaille of costumed Diaghilev dancers. Les Facheux, a ballet conceived by Boris Kochno after Moliere, choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska to music by Auric, and first performed by the Diaghilev ballet at Monte Carlo in 1924. Text in French, original wrappers designed by Braque bound-in. Rebound in green cloth, corners and backstrip extremities rubbed, black leather spine label lettered in gilt. 2 vols. Covers the years 1850 to about 1870, the most productive period for Victorian architects, and the age during which a whole range of arts, including furniture, metalwork, ceramics, and book-binding, took on a new vigor. 14. MacLin-Zimmer-McGill Publishers.

Hard-A-Port Cut Plug.

Np: MacLin-Zimmer-McGill, ca 1890. Complete deck of 53 chromolithographic playing cards, 9.5 x 5.5 cm., including the "Little Joker." The Aces and numeral cards have the suit symbols superimposed over the costumes. Backs in blue and white depicting a sailor at the helm with the advertising line, "Smoke and Chew Hard-A-Port Cut Plug." Hard-a-Port Cut Plug tobacco insert playing cards published by MacLin-Zimmer-McGill (USA) c.1890, featuring a selection of beautiful actresses from a past era, in poses some might consider risqué. This set of designs was used in around six different editions with various backs advertising Hard-a-Port Cut Plug and/or Trumps Long Cut chewing tobacco. They were originally produced by Moore and Calvi, then by their successors MacLin and Zimmer and Maclin-Zimmer-McGill in around the 1890s. The Hard-a-Port Cut Plug series depicts actresses with angelic faces dressed for the pantomime or dance hall. Orig. decorated light blue and white illustrated backs. Fine. $1,400.00

Madrid: Ignacio Diez Graf, 1964. First edition. 2 text pages. Folio, 35 x 24.5 cm. Cuaderno No. 2 of a series printed from 1964-1868. This copy, a limited edition, Number 8 of 25, hand colored lithographs with tissue guards with each print 22/28 signed by Ourvantzoff. Born in St. Petersburg he moved to Spain in 1951 and lived in Madrid. There he privately published several portfolio's of lithographs and drawings in small editions of 5 to 90 copies. Lithographs are fresh and clean and cover the various sections of Madrid, one is a large foldout. Front cover darkened at head. Orig. publisher illustrated stiff wrappers. Very good. $250.00
