CLINICAL RESEARCH
CRA'S FDA-APPROVED CLINICAL RESEARCH DEPARTMENT
| |
Parasol. Phase 2b Trial for Non-foveal Geographic Atrophy due to AMD
| |
Geographic atrophy, an advanced form of AMD characterized by progressive, irreversible loss of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors, is estimated to account for approximately 10% of AMD-related blindness. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study Research Group found that the median time to foveal involvement after GA diagnosis was 2.5 years, and average visual acuity decreased by 22 letters at year 5. Many patients with GA lose the ability to drive within 2 years, and vision-related quality of life is significantly impacted.
CRA is participating in the Parasol study to find out if an experimental drug called JNJ-81201887 is a safe and effective option for patients with geographic atrophy secondary to age-related macular degeneration. JNJ-81201887 is an investigational, one-time gene therapy for the treatment of GA. JNJ-81201887 is designed to increase the expression of CD59. This is intended to protect retinal cells thus slowing and preventing disease progression.
We're looking to enroll adults ages 60+ who fit the following criteria:
- Diagnosed with advanced dry AMD with GA.
- No history or presence of retinal disease other than GA.
- No other ocular disease that might require surgery within 18-months.

Dr. Alan Kimura is Retiring
After 27 years of practicing medicine, Dr. Alan Kimura has decided to retire as of February 29, 2024, from full time practice as a inherited retinal specialist and vitreoretinal physician at Colorado Retina.
As Dr. Kimura is currently one of the only IRD specialists in the
state of Colorado, we are still in the process of solidifying a ‘transfer of care’ plan for his existing genetic patients. At this time, genetic patients will be reviewed by CRA’s vitreoretinal specialist, Dr. Peter Hovland, and our specialized IRD team, on a case-by-case basis. All other retina patients may transfer to another CRA doctor of their choosing.
We thank Dr. Kimura for 25 great years at CRA and wish him the best as he embarks on this next, new exciting chapter!

February is Low Vision Awareness Month
Low Vision Awareness Month is observed annually throughout February. Low vision is a visual impairment that cannot be corrected by surgery or medical procedures, glasses/contacts, or pharmaceuticals. Its symptoms include blurry or hazy vision, central or peripheral vision loss, night blindness, tunnel vision, or blind spots, making everyday tasks like reading and driving difficult. Many different eye conditions can cause low vision, most common being AMD, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
Because low vision is usually permanent, it's important for these patients to find ways to make the most of their remaining vision and maintain independence. Which is why at CRA we recommend vision rehabilitation. A low vision specialist can help patients learn to live with their vision loss through a variety of visual aids, trainings and resources.
Our 2024 Colorado Low Vision Guide includes a list of local low vision specialists, services and solutions. Download, re-brand and print to provide to your low vision patients.
If you are a low vision provider and didn't make it on the Guide, email kturner@retinacolorado.com to be added.

CRA's Frisco Clinic is Closed.
Since 2017, it’s been our pleasure to provide retinal care to Colorado’s Summit County and the greater Rocky Mountain community. Unfortunately, ongoing geographical, staffing, and facility challenges ultimately led to our Frisco closure this past January. We maximized our growth potential and found our Summit clinic to be limited in scope and capacity, with a large overhead. And with no remedy to the HIPAA non-compliant office structure, unforeseen prolonged staff travel times due to highway closures and winter weather hazards, and general staff dissatisfaction, the clinic reached its natural end. Our primary objective is to provide our patients an exceptional level of vitreo-retinal care, a level in which we felt could no longer be achieved out of our Frisco location.
For mountain patients with a chronic retinal condition that require continuation of treatment, Dr. Peter Hovland and Dr. Miriah Teeter are committed to continuing your patients care at our Lakewood, CO clinic. As a practice we plan to focus our efforts on continuing to improve our five other Denver Metro clinics, and getting ready to launch our Littleton location!
On behalf of Dr. Hovland, Dr. Teeter, and the entire CRA team, thank you to those who supported this endeavor. It was a good run!

Endophthalmitis after Anti-VEGF Intravitreal Injections with Aqueous Chlorhexidine versus Povidone-Iodine as Ocular Antiseptics.
Murtaza Adam, M.D.
| |
Intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents is the most common procedure performed in ophthalmology. It has a low incidence of serious complications but is associated with a small chance of endophthalmitis, which can be visually devastating.
At CRA, safe and effective alternatives for preventing endophthalmitis is top priority. Congrats to Dr. Adam and team for publishing the first US study on the use of pretreating patients with chlorhexidine to prevent ocular infection post-injection!

IOL Options for Sutureless Fixation.
With many 3-piece lens options available, being thoughtful in your selection will help to maximize your patients' outcomes.
Murtaza Adam, M.D.
| |
Dr. Adam discusses his approach to off-label sutureless flanged intrascleral haptic fixation (ISHF) of three-piece IOLs—an approach based on the Yamane technique. "It doesn’t require a large incision to accommodate an anterior-chamber IOL, and I don’t have to suture the conjunctiva or worry about the tension on my Gore-Tex sutures. Since adopting this technique, I haven’t looked back and now perform three to six ISHF cases each week", says Dr. Adam.
In this article, Dr. Adam reviews some of the IOL options available for aphakic eyes without capsular support and provides his personal experience with these IOLs while working along their expected learning curves.
