Academy Alumni in the News
|
Bob Turton ’01 (pictured) is directing the comedic play “Can't Pay? Don't Pay!” in Los Angeles. One review notes: “The play is a political satire written in the style of commedia del’arte, invoking broad character archetypes and extreme physicality — which director Bob Turton handles expertly, finding many moments of zaniness and comedic flow. Turton keeps things moving at an unrelenting, break-neck speed throughout, which is exhausting but also necessary for the play’s comedic action.” You can read the LA Times review detailing how and why Tim Robbins entrusted Bob with the Actors’ Gang return to in-person theatre in this month's press clips. Also included are alumni Brian Brooks ’87, Michael Corey ’01, John Michael Hilsheimer ’12, Jim Friedman ’68, Jim Merkel ’92 and the late Ben Sippel ’98, as well as obituaries for John Morton Bobb III ’59 and Robert W. H. Monsarrat Jr. ’66.
Did you know “Alumni in the News” is consistently the most read section of the Alumni Newsletter? We want to hear from you! If you have clips that you have authored or where you are featured (either in print or on the web), please pass them along for future issues. Press clippings can be sent to Director of Alumni Relations Melissa Clarke Beckett at beckettm@columbusacademy.org.

Remembering Pat Eisenberger
|
We are saddened to share that former faculty member Patricia H. Eisenberger passed on February 26, 2022. Pat was the Upper School Librarian from 1980 to her retirement in 1999.
Pat received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio Dominican College with a specialization in Library Science. Prior to coming to Columbus Academy, Pat served as the Media Specialist at Johnson Park Junior High. Both an experienced librarian and committed educator, Pat served as a member on the Board of Trustees of the Bexley Public Library, the Women’s Board of Children’s Hospital, the League of Women Voters and The Ohio Association of School Librarians. The 1999 Caravel editors wrote: “Without her cheerful service, we would all be unprepared to face the librarial challenges past the gates of Academy.”

Engaging Alumni Volunteer Opportunity
|
Alumni are invited to help with a fun and exciting middle school project. Laura Miller’s eighth grade class will be conducting its annual Cold War Mock Trials on Wednesday, May 18. Laura, who serves as the Rainey S. Taylor Chair in History, is looking for alumni to come to campus to serve as judges.
The event consists of three one-hour trials. Volunteers can judge all three trials, two trials or just one trial. Trial 1 will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Trial 2 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and Trial 3 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided between Trial 2 and Trial 3.
There is no need to prepare or research the history of Cold War events prior to participating as the judging should be based on the students’ presentations. More details about the trials and judging criteria will be shared with alumni volunteers.

Check out this photo of our varsity boys and girls lacrosse coaches from the recent wedding of Victoria Foreman ’07 (right) in Sarasota, Florida! Derek Lichtfuss (left) was attending with his wife, Academy alumna Katie Ricart Lichtfuss ’07, a classmate of Victoria’s who sent us this shot. Victoria married Tomos Mughan, and they will honeymoon in Japan later this year. Victoria’s first victory as a head coach came in dramatic fashion last Thursday when her Vikings came back from an early 4-0 deficit to beat archrival Bexley 15-12. Our boys, meanwhile, are off to a 5-0 start and are the state’s top-ranked Division II team. They are led by Derek, last year's Division II Coach of the Year, and All-American senior Zach White, who shattered the state scoring record last spring on his way to earning Division II Player-of-the-Year honors.
