Academy Alumni in the News
Tracy Subisak ’05 (pictured), a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator, received a Floyd’s Pick Book Award for her children’s book “Jenny Mei Is Sad” presented by the State Library of Ohio and the Choose to Read Ohio (CTRO) Advisory Council. The Floyd’s Pick Book Award is given annually to a book written by an Ohio author or illustrated by an Ohio illustrator that is representative of high-quality literature created for children. “Jenny Mei Is Sad” is a universally relevant story of friendship, compassion and validating children’s emotions. It was praised by the CTRO Advisory Council for its rich story behind simple sentences; for its beautiful, understated illustrations; and for opening space for discussion while staying faithful to a child’s understanding and response to helping a friend no matter what. Also included in this months press clippings are alumni Ada (Malinowska) Andruszkiewicz ’98, Avishar Barua ’05, Donald Brown ’90, Bob Eckhart ’87, Michael Hallet ’70, Abby Jeffers ’18, Bro Krift ’95, Todd Park ’90, Kyle Reis ’01, Angela (Phillips) Thomas ’01, Ryan Vesler ’01 and Patti Zettler ’98 as well as obituaries for Richard Herbert Gurevitz ’56, Charles William (Bill) O’Brien ’61 and Dudley W. Jordan Jr. ’72.

If you have clips (either in print or on the web) to pass along for future issues, please send them to Director of Alumni Relations Melissa Clarke Beckett at beckettm@columbusacademy.org.
Honoring Vicki Ross
It is with great sadness that we share with you the news of the passing of a member of the Columbus Academy community, Victoria (Vicki) Alice Ross. Vicki passed away on May 29, 2022, following the passing of her husband Butch on May 6, 2022.

Vicki retired from Columbus Academy in 2010 after 34 years of service. She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from The Ohio State University and went on to earn a master’s degree in reading supervision at Ashland College. While at Academy, Vicki taught middle school reading, social studies and language arts before finishing her career as head librarian for the Middle School Reinberger Library. Vicki established the middle school drama program and directed it for 12 years in addition to beginning the fifth grade trips to Sunwatch and Greenfield Village. She also coached the middle school golf team for many years and kept stats for the middle school track program. Vicki’s sons Bill and Jim graduated from Academy in 1986 and 1989, respectively.

In 2015, Vicki received the Alumni Service Award, an honor designed to recognize a member of the faculty or staff who has distinguished him/herself through a commitment to the school through service to his/her students.

Sports News
Our school has quite a history of athletic success. Over the years, our varsity teams have won 39 team state championships in nine different sports. We have the most state titles in field hockey (12) of any school in the state, and our current streak of five straight state championships in boys golf is the longest all-time in Ohio for golf, where we have earned the state’s second-most titles (12). For the opening spread of our upcoming fall magazine, we are asking members of the Academy community what their all-time favorite Columbus Academy sports memory is. If you would like to submit a favorite memory, please email it to info@columbusacademy.org.
Following his junior year, Viking football and track standout Emmanuel “EJ” Jenkins was named the MSL-Ohio division’s Wayne Roller Scholar Athlete! To qualify for the nomination, students must have earned at least two varsity letters during the school year, have an accumulative grade point average of 3.5 or greater and complete an application listing academic/athletic accomplishments, service projects and recommendations from school administrators and coaches. EJ was one of just four honorees in Academy’s division to receive a plaque from the league and was recognized at an all-league banquet in June.
