Introducing New Alumni Relations Director Michael Haddock
Please help us welcome Michael Haddock as Columbus Academy’s new Director of Alumni Relations. He previously served as Senior Associate of Engagement and Alumni Relations at the Knowlton School of Architecture at Ohio State University, where he was the point of contact for all annual giving and scholarship raising, stewardship, event coordination, volunteer recruitment and overall alumni engagement strategies. Prior to that, Michael was Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement for OSU’s College of Optometry, a role for which he was named by the school’s alumni association as 2018 Alumni Relations Officer of the Year. Michael holds two degrees from Ohio State – a bachelor’s in Strategic Communications and a master’s in Public Policy and Management – and chairs the monthly education programs committee for the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Central Ohio Chapter. He can be reached at haddockm@columbusacademy.org or 614-509-2290.
Academy Alumni in the News
Last fall, while leading an outdoor pre-orientation program for first-year Kalamazoo College students in a remote area of the Adirondack Mountains, Columbus Academy alumna Julia Leet ’18 (on left in photo) played a crucial role in saving an injured hiker who had to be rescued by an Army helicopter. Television Story Recognizes Life-Saving Heroes at Academy
Near the end of a recent seventh grade girls basketball game at Academy, a referee collapsed on the court and was almost immediately attended to by members of our security and athletic department staff as well as medical professionals who happened to be in the stands. Thankfully, our campus is equipped with 10 AED stations (with more on the way) and one was quickly brought to help with the resuscitation of this individual, who is now recovering at home. The referee’s wife (pictured with some of the individuals who helped to save him) recently visited campus to thank the athletic trainers and security officer who came to her husband’s aid. A news story about this incident aired on 10TV, and more coverage is likely as organizations such as Project ADAM advocate for more schools to follow our model of having AEDs and CPR training for staff.
School News
Six upper-schoolers received honors this school year as part of the College Board National Recognition Program: seniors Alexis Cunningham, EJ Jenkins and Nnenna Onwe as well as juniors Zoya Arnold, Ceci Reitter and Eliora Teferi. They excelled in College Board assessments and schoolwork throughout the 2021-22 school year to earn these awards, which colleges use to identify academically competitive underrepresented students. According to the program description on the College Board website, these national programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country.
Our latest Experience magazine is now available online by clicking here. Our athletics department is highlighting former 12-season athletes with video interviews on its social media. The first two alumni to be featured were Mary Kate Prall ’22 and Kennedy Jackson ’22.
